[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Photography for Beginners Series No. PfB(8).

Most times when dim light condition prevails in a scene, we need to control the aperture using slow shutter speed, and that is when a tripod comes useful because it avoids hand motion blur. It was probably not a wise choice but I had thought of forcing slow shutter by testing my newly-acquired ball-head tripod by choosing aperture f/32 [I had to admit I made a blunder here by using iso1250 and yet f/32, it may perhaps be sufficient to use f/16? but I am not prepared to get 5s or 10s shutter].

Next problem comes the decision of choosing the focus point. That can be easily done by selecting the foreground feature to focus. Then the exposure metering to be chosen based on either spot, center-weighted average, pattern or matrix type. For silhouette purpose, we normally point the meter to the brighter side of the scene and let the rest become relatively dark/shadow tone. In this way, the color spectrum of the sunset can turn up with blue, yellow, orange and sometimes red around the sun.

My previous tripod was a free gift from purchase of camera set and it could only take very light load. So investment on a steady good tripod is worth considering. When Jusni landed in Kuching, we met and came to this waterfront to experience his 1st sunset here.

Try to point your meter to the darker spot of the scene, then you will find that most part of the sky will be overexposed, perhaps including the reflection on water. If you know how to set the compensation using metering in the camera by EV+0.3, +1, +2 or EV-0.2, -1, -1 etc choices, you can try to experiment on the result from such options. That will be for another discussion.

iso1250, FL70mm

Hi Bill,
This is a really good example of using this 'unusual' aperture value and low shutter speed. The warm lights of the background look fastastic with this setting as well as the exposition of the sky. Beautiful composition with the boat in the foreground, calm and peaceful sunset photo. Thanks for the useful technical notes, great to learn and experiment! TFS!
Kind regards,
Kristof

Hello Bill.
Result is not bad at all.
The main subject, the men in the little boat are well displayed.
The siloueths around the water makes it a very good composition. The warm evening light with its colours on the water is nice to see.
Best wishes from Jan

Bonsoir Bill,

I like the notes. TL is the right place to learn and to teach. Many may say: I know that. But many new photographer may like to learn from each one point of view. Personnel I prefer a note telling me how to do, than a note telling me what it is.
Anyway, this a nice shot perfectly exposed to reveal the mood of the moment. Amazing sharpness. Nice composition. Great work and TFS.

Hello Bill,
Stunning sunset. Well balanced composition

Lovely colours and good exposure. Good advice also. I have discovered that when shooting at this time of the evening it is a good idea to use manual focus and set it on infinity.

Hi Bill,

Hi Bill,
Very interessting note. Hard to believe this was shot with 1/1.25 sec. Boat, persons and waves look like frozen. For me depth of field is one of the most important features. Wide angle lenses usually have a much greater DOF at all apertures than standard or telelenses. From my experience I would have used a wider angle than 70mm - maybe 17 mm and this could have resulted a sharp photograph at a much wider aperture and therefore speedier shuttertime. Of course only if POV would allow this.
No matter how you have achieved this result. It looks excellent, colours are great and I also like your minimalistic framing. TFS

Hi Bill

Apart from the very useful note, the capture is certainly worth praise. I really like the accented color tones that create a magic moment. very dramatic and strong, and the excellent manipulation of contrasts. Really impressive, my friend.
