[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a photo taken at Kampung Pasir, Johor Bahru 3 weeks ago. This old village is very unique and I took lots of photos during my visit there. This is also one of my favourites, the "sampans" or the small wooden boat used to travel around the area between sea and river.

I decided to try some post-processing on this photo, and i think the 'softened' effect is very easy to apply and the outcome is kinda interesting too.

These are the steps, using Adobe Photoshop 8.0 :
1. Duplicate layer
2. Apply Gaussian Blur [6.0] on the original later
3. On the duplicated layer, set the opacity to 50%
4. Merge all visible layers.

Thats all, quick, easy and nice. hehehe..

I am new in post-processing, and i hope i use it correctly here.

Nice shot Thong. Tones are soft, DOF and frame excellent.
I had better this one than food (haha!)
Best regards

I like the softened look. It really works well in this shot. Nice job.

This is soft and erie. The positioning gives depth. Nice eye.

Another extra step you can do is to duplicate another layer and add a 'reveal all' mask to it. Then using black foreground and white background brush, slowly 'paint' the parts of the picture where you need it to be sharp. Remember to set 'flow control' to 20% and opacity to 50% for the brush.

That is extremely nice softening of a beautiful shot taken at an interesting angle and composed very originally (little sky, front boat not complete, empty space on the right). But it all adds up to something very attractive and fascinating. Good first attempt.

Hi Thong, I just discovered this one. You did again a great job pp on this picture. Very very nice, very calming atmosphere. I like your work

Marleen

I like the mood that this picture exudes. "A welcomed rest after a good day's work" :=)

I think the picture would have been even stronger if the background was blurred out even more.
