hi all,
another one of my posting based on poverty and the neglect of the aged community in the society.

i've started working in Penang for a week and began to learn about this new town a lot more, and looking at it at another perspective...earlier, i took many shots on different occasions of old folks being neglected (all of them taken when i was visiting this town).

what saddens me is the continuous development of the town....every corner i see luxurious cars, superb condominium units (with sea view)...and stylish people....at first glance it seemed to me that this is one town where poverty is not even an issue....

yet, please look at this photo and a few more from my gallery.....then i think the same question will pop up....Is it so important to achieve the status quo of being a modern and developed nation? are we up to it? of it is just a senseless uthopia created to fool the world?

the price to pay is so much more...and those who can't keep up with the pace has to pay for it....everywhere i look, old homeless people roam the streets, at night they sleep in parks and bus stops.....have we achieved our goals after all?

photo taken at Kek Lok Si Temple....i took a shot from far, not to disturb him...cropped and did a little desaturating. the red element is the railing which is intentionally included (i am not sure why...i just liked it:)

this is just a scenario from a developing town in my country....i hope i did not offend anyone with my words....i can be a devil sometimes:) tell me what u think.

have a nice weekend......

Hi Eleen,
Thanks for addressing such issues. You raise some good questions. At what price for "progress" and how much of responsibility is it of the people and its government? And, what are the social views on material worth? What's more valuable?...that Mercedes you have or the care of that person that's sitting on the street? You have good eyes and a good heart to see and feel with. And this picture is a reflection of that.
Richard

Call me heartless but beggars like this should wash up, clean up themselves then go for an interview for a job. Heck, even as a farmer or expressway toll collector would help him to get a decent low-cost house with food on the table everyday.

Thanks for sharing Eleen

Think this is a very good composition eleen and to me it reflect what you trying to state in your note..like the way you left the negative space on the right here ..nice work !

bonjour eleen.

hello eleen.
This poverty that you show exist in all the countries. Certain countries hide them better. The large cities of the world are the attractions of all these poor because they hope to be better comforted. Unfortunately it is not the case, much of these poor people still wander in our streets where the richness it does not hide.

It's sad to know people are neglected. You have captured this feeling very well. Good use of your zoom.

Very raw and oh so familiar. A sad but realistic view of our society. B

No, you didn't offend me at all. But this is a common sight in our world unfortunately... When I was a little girl I always imagined that when we reached the 21st century the world would be fantastic and that images such has yours would only be found in photo archives! Each day that passes I am more dissapointed!! So much progress it's true, but too much neglect.
This is definitely not the world of my dreams...
Thanks for bringing this one here ;-)

Yes, Eleen, unfortunately it seems the same scenario all over the world.

Thanks for bringing such strong pictures and notes to us.

Nice capture of the reality. Desaturation and the railing works well.

Great shot. I like the low point of view and you were right with keeping the railing. Your note is also excellent. Great job!

oui la pauvreté est presente meme dans nos villes!
amitiés....tanbinh.

Hi Eleen,
You ve taken a beautiful shot and written a meaningful note. The wall on background, consisting of fragments of stones, maybe it shows how his world is broken.. or our modern world?

Well Eleen, you sure have a point here; but I think Malaysia is not the only country where this is an issue... any country that wants to pace up with richer countries, and want to do it fast, 'forgets' about the more unfortunate members of their society.
Anyway, you have captured this scene excellently. The picture has a rare quality, I think you could sell this to National Geographic. No, not flattering you... I wouldn't wanna get into trouble with Thong ;o), I really mean it. I only wonder if this kind of shot doesn't belong on TE more than it does here... but then again, I'm glad I saw it. TFS, TFS².

I think you are saying things that need to be said, unfortunitly it is but like minded people who hear these words, for those who are pushing for development never do.

This man looks very interesting, I take it you didn't talk to him? There is another way of looking at this also my friend. There is a saying in Persian "It is easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than a rich man to go to heaven."

In another words it is also part of our test as humans, and although these people sleep in the streets and are not well looked after in another way of seeing things they are also God's charges and will know more of the spiritaul world for their pain and suffering.

I am not saying that they should not be helped more, for the crazy thing is that if the rich and stylish of this city you see before you could do that they would be gaining so much.

Very good image. Thanks for this, and never be afraid to say what your heart tells you is right. Loving thoughts from Francis.
