The Sabah Dragon Boat Race is an annual event that is anticipated every year by the people of Sabah especially for the Chinese population. The dragon boat race is held in celebration of the Duanwu Festival where the main focus includes the eating zongzi (similar to sticky rice dumpling) and dragon boat racing.

The 23rd Sabah Dragon Boat Race is held at the Likas Bay about 5 minutes from Kota Kinabalu on the 15th June 2008. This event never fails to attract a huge amount of spectators both locals and tourists. Of course, it is also one of the yearly events in Sabah that also attracts a huge amount of photographers. I was one of those photographers that day.. although only armed with 18-55mm kit lens. I've yet the cash to get a telephoto zoom.

After spending a couple of hours taking photos of the event, I decided to call it quits and go home since the weather seems to be turning for the worse. As I was walking to my car, I saw this scene. I didn't even bother to look at the setting of my camera and just took the shot. I gave the photo a little pseudo-HDR treatment and adjusted the saturation of the photo. I could watch that cloud a whole day.. unless it rains of course.

Regards,
Alvin

wow very beautiful cloud formation. nice capture

Hi Alvin,

It was the clouds that grabbed my attention at first. When I opened the image, I noticed the beautiful red of the dragon boats.

Nice blue and gray tones with the bright red contrast.

thanks for sharing, Lisa

hi Alvin

The sky and clouds are really very strking in this capture. Well composed shot with the boats moving along horizon. Perhaps a slight tilt of the building and over saturation due to red vests, IMO.

TFS, bill

Hai Alvin,

Well composed picture, the clouds was looks great.

Best regards

Steve

I would call this a quiet and graphical impression of that day Alvin. Especially how you have done the clouds. It's full of characters and appealing. But I liked your attitude better. You knew you were too far away from where the action was but it didn't stop you from shooting the environments.

When the weather went fouled that morning, some of us went "skodeng". The dragon boats were too far from the beach, the light was getting bad and inexpressive and therefore, we decided to shoot the audiences.

We have a saying back in photography school. There are more than one way of looking at things. In fact there are 360 of them.

Have fun looking Alvin.

Hi Alvin,
Wa.... lawa bos!!
The best gear, is the one in your hand. Sometimes, 'kekurangan' boleh jadi satu 'kelebihan'. Macam dalam gambar ni, wide lens punya pasal, dapat gambar dragon boat dengan landscape yang mengeWOWkan. I am impressed with this, Alvin.

Regards,
Ramdan.

wow Alvin.. the clouds are so beautiful.. itu yg menarik bagi saya.. nice one you got there mcm nampak dramatic pula.. even your horizon very straight.. cantik lah.. well done.

HI Alvin
Very impressive composition, the clouds dominating this shot it is nice to see the rowers in the distance. I am guessing a bit of pp work on the vest which are quite red against the muted tones of the ocean.
Nice work

Hello Alvin. This is a very good wide perspective composition. The boats and the tall building balances well in the shot. The horizon and the sky is very well taken care of. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Hi Alvin,

this is impressive with the inclusion of that signature landmark of Menara Tun Mustapha. the clouds add to the beauty. i like the silverish look on the water, something different from the usual turqoise look on a cloudless sunny day.

well done, pal.
