[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Windows of God that gave me the light to shoot this interior of Anglican Church at top of a hill at Kampung Sadir. It happend to be Sunday morning falling on June 1, 2008 which was the 1st day of Gawai Festival celebration in Sarawak for local Bidayuhs, but this year no grand celebration. We stayed at Pastor William's homestay and so naturally he would welcome us to church service next morning. I got up at 7am and just as I stepped out with my camera to look for subjects, William showed up at my doorstep to remind that church would begin at 8am.

Yes, at 7.47am you can see a small group inside the church. Even though very basic and simple construction (the timber roof trusses sagging, just asbestos cement sheets and adjustable louvre windows), the church is a focal point each Sunday for Bidayuhs to congregate and exchange greetings and mix socially. William conducted the service throughout and he spoke in loud clear voice, full of praise for God. We, 4 of us visitors, sat at the right rear (all ladies seated at left, men at right). Towards the end, our Iron-man Hoe peeked into the donation pouch and saw a RM50 note among the coins and RM1 notes, and said this should come from outsider. (Technically, the strong light at the windows streamed into the church but I would take it as blessed light, not as OE light), that is the power. Strange as it may be, the church service was conducted entirely in Bidayuh language, so we understood very little, but rather just felt the flow of light.

Have you ever wonder, in a remote mountainous areas of Sarawak/Indonesia border, Bidayuhs live and preach the bible, and everybody has a Christian name? When we walked back to the village, William was telling proudly that in future another new church would stand beside this old one. I can take it as his dream and his goal.

One thing is certain - I will be back to see William and his village. I post

a workshop of William's house

to honor his dedication to life and dream.

Hi Bill,
A light condition such as this is really challenging, and tricky. I believe that you had chose not to use flash to compensate the bright harsh light from outside. Anyway, the result had given and created something, meaningful impression as to what this spiritual place is. Your interpretation to the ray is actually very true. I have seen other photographers' works in a spiritual place, implementing similar treat to the light - they made it be part of the beauty, as an expression to the greatness of HIM.

Great note as well.
Regards,
Ramdan.

Hi Bill,
Simple as God likes. Lovely picture.

I like the colors, contrast.

Hi Bill,

I never thought of calling them windows of God. What a great title. But then again, what else would we call a window that is attached to the walls of God's house, eh?

I like the perspective and usage of natural lighting in this photo. Great photo.

TFS.

Regards,
Alvin

Hi Bill
Great choice for the theme. It is strange that this anglican church does not have the pews, I guess its a more modern version that what they have here.
Good composition and clarity.
