Bidayuh woman at work to remove rice husking for 'Gawai' harvest celebration in Sarawak each June. Green bamboo stem at lower right is used to stuff rice or chicken in it and to be cooked over wood fire. Unlike in Kedah or more advanced mechanised methods, Kampung Sadir villagers here resort to manual work for rice harvest.

Harvest lyrics - (by Opeth)
Stay with me awhile
Rise above the vile
Name my final rest
Poured into my chest

Into the orchard I walk peering way past the gate
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead
Halo of death, all I see is departure
Mourner's lament but it's me who's the martyr

Pledge yourself to me
Never leave me be
Sweat breaks on my brow
Given time ends now

Into the orchard I walk peering way past the gate
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead
Halo of death, all I see is departure
Mourner's lament but it's me who's the martyr

Spirit painted sin
Embers neath my skin
Veiled in pale embrace
Reached and touched my face

Into the orchard I walk peering way past the gate
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead
Halo of death, all I see is departure
Mourner's lament but it's me who's the martyr

hi Bill, excellent shot and moment, really nice contrast with the bg and you took it at the right moment as she stops the movement but the rice is still on the air ans shows the nice motion blur effect

Hi Bill,

Rabani recently told us...."shoot something ethnic!, and this image just reminds me of what he said.

the dynamism is well seen here...the rice falling back to the bamboo tray.

refrigerator and biscuit can aside, the rest of the subjects here are ethnic. i like it.

TFS

Hi Bill,

I especially like your work in documenting the lives of people. You capture it as you see it without dilution or additives. My favourite part of the photo is the streaks of the rice grain being tossed by the lady. A great shot with natural light.

TFS.

Regards,
Alvin

Dear Bill,
Beautiful composition. it is a wonderful photo with
lovely colors and excellent details.
Each grain of rice is in harmony with the old lady!
Take care.

Hello Bill. The term we use here for this kind of winnowing is menampi. I don't think the younger generation here have the skill to do it anymore. Nice capture with good lighting and pleasant background. I wonder if the stuff behind her are for sale. Those are fine handcrafted items. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni
