[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After shooting this scene in May, I was hesitant about posting it because I found the polarized light showing faded color tone under overcast hazy sky of afternoon, and some corner vignette. The mud bank and muddy water at this location where Sarawak River meets the South China Sea gives a faded look as if this is 20 year old slide film, IMO? Malaysian afternoon light is always very harsh and difficult to handle in photography. So any good suggestions will be welcome.

The 2 fishermen helping each other to check fishing net harvest caught my attention while standing on the isolated white sand bar. Come to think of it, I found this meditation quote. The famous meditation from John Donne(1572-1631, Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions).

Human beings do not thrive when isolated from others. Donne was a Christian but this concept is shared by other religions, principally Buddhism.

"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated...As therefore the bell that rings to a sermon, calls not upon the preacher only, but upon the congregation to come: so this bell calls us all: but how much more me, who am brought so near the door by this sickness....No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

This famous meditation of Donne's puts forth two essential ideas which are representative of the Renaissance era in which it was written:

No man is an island, entire of itself...The idea that people are not isolated from one another, but that mankind is interconnected; and

Never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for theeThe vivid awareness of mortality that seems a natural outgrowth of a time when death was the constant companion of life.

Donne brings these two themes together to affirm that any one man's death diminishes all of mankind, since all mankind is connected; yet that death itself is not so much to be feared as it at first seems. Join us in exploring these two main themes, which we have associated with the two controlling images of the meditation...the island and the bell.

Hi Bill,

i think your city's proximity to southern/central part of Borneo in a way is a disadvantage because forest fires and open burnings are quite rampant thus causing the hazy sky as noticeable here. i remember one time when an emergency was declared due to a very poor visibility and the air pollution index deteriorated.

i can imagine how more beautiful this image could be minus the haze. i like the POV here.

TFS

Agoes

Very cool shot Bill, I like this - and a thought provoking note too.

Composition is key to this one - excellent placement of horizon, and of the two fishermen. Rich colours and saturation and the vignetting effect around the corners works well too.

You live in a beautiful part of the world!

Hello Bill.
Thanks for uploading. Its a good looking picture, with great composition.
The 'special' light gives it an apart look.
Notting wrong with the Malaysian 'Afternoon tea light'.
It al depents on the mood of mother nature, right ?
The framing could have been less, like to see more of the picture.
Greetings and Terima kasih from Jan

Hi Bill,
This is an attractive photo. I like the muted colours due to the hazy sky. The people makes the picture complete.

Hi Bill,
Nice capture of these fishermen on the sand bar. I think the hazy look provides a nice atmosphere. I like the way the light isolates the fishermen, like they are on a stage. The vignetting adds a nice polished look this great shot.

Kevin

Hello Bill, there is an eerie light across the landscape which is interrupted by this tiny island of sand.
As I look at your picture, my eyes are constantly drawn back to the two men standing on the sand.Very well observed.
Your notes are thought provoking, thanks.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Whatever you did wrong looks pretty darn good to me.
I like this dark atmosphere making the island and its occupant become the center of attraction.
