Ruslan (Lano) asked me to post my experimental studio shot of Rambutan which I did some months ago. I wish I can, but after giving my shots a closer look and consideration, I decided not to since they are not good enough for presentation. So, this morning I made another experimental session, a quick one.

Here are some details of the experiment:
1. Setting the rambutans on a white dinner plate – no particular reason for the choice of white plate but just a quick grab - I was thought by my mentor that the biggest, worst enemy in food photography is TIME. The experimental session I had just done proved it to be very true. The fresh look of food doesn’t last long.
2. Done outdoor:
- to capture more natural, punchy color of the fruit – looks better than the ones I got with studio setup (I think I need more studies on the studio lighting and setup for better and natural results); and
- having nature as background had given my Rambutan more appetizing and tropical feels.
- a backlight (from sun) needed to enhance the character of the fruit.
3. Off-camera/slave flash set at half of its full power, mounted on hot-shoe and positioned at 9 o’clock left to soften shadow. Natural light were at 2 o’clock right, slightly at the back of the subject.
4. Camera flashes a bit of fill-in.
5. White cotton fabric as a shade was put about 2-3 ft away, at right to filter the sun harsh light.

Some more details on PP:
1. The RAW file was converted to JPEG using my camera processor. I found that, so far, in-camera conversion results look better than the ones I processed with my CS3 or ACDSeePro2 [the software are good but the man using it needs more homework to dig into the software’s best capabilities. :)]
2. Cloning works, to clean up distracting spots.
3. Tweaking of level and curves to improve tonality.
4. Selective color, to give the red a bit more punch.
5. Color profile converted to sRGB to enhance consistency of web color accuracy (I am using Adobe RGB color space for editing – wider color-gamut for more smooth tonality/gradation); and
6. Resized, and sharpened.

The only thing that makes food photography to be ‘quite easy’ is the subject we are shooting at stands still. And we do not have to worry about wind. :)

Great shot!

I like your choice of background. It's different than the usual table top or restaurant type food shots.

Good lighting too. Good use of the natural light and I think the ratios are spot on. Good idea with the white fabric to take the edge of the sun light. Looking at the shadows on the left I'm not sure how much the sun light was diffused by the fabric though. This is a good thing in my opinion as it gives the impression of being outdoors in the sun instead of under a cloudy sky.

Great note explaining the process of this shot.

Well done!

Cheers,
Jens

Hi Randam!
Very nice capture! The composition is great and the colors too.
TFS.

hi Ramdan

How I wish I have your dedication and attention to details on this setup, it is reaaly what many of us are not giving it a thought like you. As my comments on rigz and lano posts, rambutan should look this way as a food item - selection of the best sample.

Technically, very well done. The light is good and focus is as sharp as can be. If you apply this to portrait, it may very well work too?

Superb work.

tfs, bill

Hello Ramdan,
Superb composition of this favorite exotic fruit. I am glad you showed the peeled and unpeeled fruits as it provides greater viewing pleasure. The spikes from the rind are most attractive. Colors and lighting are well managed.

nice food photo, i miss more in the bottom
excellent photographic quality

Hi Ramdan,
Very impressive shot. I like how you captured the detail in the food as well as the freshness. The lighting looks great I think the white sheet really helped in keeping a good exposure. I think your right about the natural outdoors setting giving this a more appealing tropical look. Very nice work.

Kevin

Assalamuallaikum Ramdan,

Ini betul-betul Yummy. Cadangan yang diberi pada saya hari itu rupanya kesan ini memang begitu "meliurkan". Teknikal no komen. Shot ini memang betul-betul menakjubkan bagi saya.
Tahniah!

Hi Ramdan, Very professional looking photo of this delicious frit. The hairy outside is not so appealing but after the first time, most love this tasty fruit for breakfast. The DOF effect makes it dramatic. TFS. Murray.
