When I got my first experience in handling a DSLR (which I had rent from a friend), water splash was one of my subjects for experimental works. I had done very long experimental sessions, occupied gigabytes of memory, tried various techniques and the list goes on... To this date, I believe water splash and drops are still a nice subject to play with. Meaning to say, I love shooting them. :)

Some of the results had been posted in my gallery. Thankfully, I was given useful tips on improving the shot I got. So here it is, another pick from my latest play with water splash.

The setup for this shot was done differently from those I had posted to overcome an irritating lighting flaw, which was also pointed out and suggested by Rew (rewshearer) some time ago – thank you, Rew. “I really don't think a camera-mounted flash was the way to light this. There are at least six points of bright, washed-out flash reflection in the drip of water, and the overall capture is a little flat” as he commented on one of my water drop photo. So this time I had been doing the session with an off-camera slave flash, diffused and bounced using a white polyfoam for a smoother lighting. What did it gave me was more smooth light reflection on the water.

I also tried various kinds of kitchen utensils for a backdrop. On this particular shot, the backdrop was an old cutting board that I found discarded on a cabinet – I like the most for its non-reflective surface, so I’ll keep it for my water splash works :). The base was a red plastic container.

Some other setup and preparation could be found in my previous shots of water splash/drops. Couldn't make a proper hyperlink to them... (?)

Hi Ramdan,

Great photo!
Really cool effect!
Good sharpness!

This is wonderful Ramdan! Superb sharpness here, love the splash being off center, RICH color here. I need to try this, but I have a feeling I'd shoot 200 pics to get ONE good one! Nice work!

Olá, Randam!

Great shot! Nice sharpness and a beautiful
effect. Colors and light are nice too.
Congratulations! Well done job!

Abraços,
Bruno

Hi Ramdan,
you did a wonderful job here, I love your shot.
I also love to make shots like that - also have several here on TL.
It's amazing to see the results of a drop, jumping right out of the water.
Thanks and greetings
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Ramdan,
Excellent detail here! I think you've really shown your appreciation to Rew by showing us the results of your exchange. I think the OOF background really makes us focus on the droplets. The use of the cutting board and the red plastic container was genius. You never know what we have lying around that would make good backdrops!
Well done...it's so pleasant and interesting to look at!
Scott

congratulations on your fruitful experiment here with the 'upgraded' lighting gear. the outcome really speaks volume for your passion for a perfection.

the 'crystalised' water drop here stands out superbly lovely against the BG. thanks to the thoughtful set up too.

can't you make a hyperlink to your own works? they are yours...you are the rightful right owner to them.

makin leceh lah peraturan di sini sekarang. makin mengarut! yg sudah mengarut, lagi lah mengarut!

This is very impressive work, mate! I absolutely love the crisp, sharp detail of the droplet splashing upwards, a miniature version of a mushroom cloud?

The light is beautifully done - diffuse, with good sense of depth and dimension; your backdrop and base tray work very well in combination to create interesting colours and images within the droplet.

This is a success!

Assalamuallaikum Ramdan,

Tahniah!

hi Ramdan

I remember your 1st droplet post. Amazing how you still keep that interest.

Very well executed 1/160s to get this sharp freeze of the droplet and the macro effect is great especially it looks like a crystal.

What is causing the reddish color below?

You chose a good BG color for the blur and somehow the droplet starts to looks like a solid form of crystal art.

Great work.

Hi Ramdan,

I've always wanted to make a nice water drop/splash shot but I'm not technically proficient in doing the setup yet. As I read your notes, there is quite a number prepping to do. Well, one day I'll get it too and hopefully it would be at least as good as yours here.

Alvin

Boa noite Ramdan

;-)

Now this is a shot to talk about :-)

I'm amazed at the sharpness of the watersplash given the relatively slow speed of 1/160 - a great lesson there, I think, in how to capture this kind of shot. Really very good work, Ramdan, and a great reward for all your effort. Lovely image.

A beautiful drop shot Ramdan. As winter approaches, I think I will try this type of shot some more. To me the most difficult is gauging or anticipating where the optimum focus will be, and that you succeeded in here. I see that Sabine (wishnugaruda) has commented. Her gallery is full of beautiful drop shots and techniques. My compliments...Danilo

Hello Ramdan!
Incredible sharpness, great focus and wonderful colours and reflection!
Very well done!
Best regards!

Hi Ramdan

Your experiments with lighting and set up gave you a superb water drop shot. One of the best I have seen. Beautifully sharp, well lit and with superb shape.

All the best for 2009
