[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Joining Helen's Friday theme, SMILE, I am posting this portrait of my eldest son, Rafi.

Lighting used here was a 300W halogen lamp (softened with a white cotton fabric), experimenting the tips I'd learned from Rew [rewshearer]) - It was put on camera-front-right, in between Rafi and the black velvet backdrop. A 2'x4' white polystyrene put in front-left of Rafi to bounce the halogen light for the light on his face. I used a wall-bounced and snoot'ed' light from a wireless flash at camera-front-left, behind Rafi, to give a little amount of hair light.

Not so sure how successful was this experiment - your kind feedback, advices and tips are very much appreciated, with thanks in advance.

Nice portrait with a big smile.

Good composition with a good pose.

I think the lighting is pretty good. A little flat if you can call it that. Could use more contrasting light and shadow on the right side of the face I think.

I don't think you have to bounce your snooted flash into the ceiling for hairlight. I think it's easier to control if you just should it straight at his hair. If it's to narrow you can shorten the snoot. I've used cereal boxes for snoots but lately I've been using a DIY snoot of black straws which seems to be very effective at controlling the light.

Look like you have a little front focus. His right shoulder is sharp while his left is out of focus. Ideally the focus should be on both his eyes. Did you use auto focus to focus and then compose? Maybe that caused it.

I did a workshop to try and add some overall contrast. The colors are a bit more pale but I think it came out well.
Hope you like it.

Cheers,
Jens

hi Ramdan

How are you doing lately? Your portrait work is going up to light experiment here and it shows a good aspect of photography worth the effort. He is a lovely boy and very happy to be your UNPAID model (normal charge RM75/hour please when he is still not famous yet). To save money, put on a tripod, timer and shoot your self portrait!

The light is a bit less at the top of the head, a touch strong on his left face. But I am happy with this work. After shooting, dont forget to buy him a starbucks coffee.

tfs, bill

An incredibly handsome DUDE Ramdan! He has a big REAL smile, love how you did this, very good quality shot, excellent lighting and perfect for the theme! Nice job! I'll get you are having to keep the ladies away!

Hello Ramdan,

You have learned your lesson well from Rew.
I think this is a great shot.
For me, there is just enough light on the right to outline the face and the soft shadows give lovely contours to the face.
What a warm, engaging smile. I cannot help smiling in response.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Assalamuallaikum Ramdan,

Pertamanya komposisi ini cukup menarik. Contrast antara subject dengan BG cukup berkesan. Superb sharpness and details. Tahniah!

Making a good portrait needs skill, and you proofed that you have that Ramdan.

Well it's not easy setting up portrait lighting - so kudos to you!

I think this works well, your fill light is warm and nicely diffuse, the bounced side lighting works ok too, although perhaps you could move it a little further towards the back so that it doesn't spill so much across his face, and you get a nicer sense of depth?

Hair light is always tough, you just have to keep experimenting with that one, in this instance I think it still needs more light on his hair to separate it from the background.

The focus seems good to me, no problem with the slightly-out-of-focus shoulder.

Keep the shots coming mate - this is good work!

Rew

a very nice portrait and you notes is really very helpful on how you came about this composition. i do agree with rew, the left side of the face could have less bounce light. nevertheless, a very contagiuos smile to say the least. reagards to you and your kid. TFS.

Saudara,

Macam muka bapa dia juga bah. Acuan Ranau tatap ada hehehehe...
Pencahayaan yang menarik, pakai slave flash kah? Black BG was great. ECU was good with crisp DOF.

apa di dahinya tu aaa....pottu ka, tambi?

inda payah rasanya aku jadi kakatua pakar-pakar lighting di sini. aku akur ja dgn komen dorang. mimang hebat perlampuannya!
