1/100 sec, f/8 at 73mm. Argh!!... I lost the exif data after doing an experiment on post-processing workflow to get the skin tone. Too bad, I couldn't remember the steps I'd gone through for the final result I wanted to make. But one thing for sure, it was done using lots of layer blends in PS. And, that is the reason for me to put this in HPP category.

The shot was also an experiment for the lighting technique to get the ‘blown effect’ I'd seen in my reference photo (of a fashion magazine). To be honest, I am not sure why they have to ‘blow out’ their light on some part of their model but I think like it. I did a complete mess in my living room during the session, trying hard to understand how to get this result. :-D

Of course, your kind feedback on what do you think about the effect is very much appreciated.

I had used a wireless bounced flash closer to Seha to get that effect – actually Seha moved closer to the flash since I needed the flash to stay close to the wall for a strong bounced light. A 2’ x 4’ polystyrene was used as a reflector, put in front of Seha for fill-in and for the catch light I used my camera fill flash, heavily diffused.

Hi Ramdan,
This is a wondeful headshot. The lighting is great in this image. Her skin tones are wondeful and I love the focus on her eyes. Excellent note explaining the setup. I'm trying to do more portrait work myself and your notes are most usefull. TFS.
Regards,
Kevin

Nice work on this portrait Ramdan! Her skin is very smooth and she is a beautiful girl! I like the tight crop, very natural smile is good for this. Nice eye contact!

Hi Ramdan

If you believe TrekLens critiques, any "blown out" elements in a photo are bad.

If you believe the world of successful photographers and acclaimed professionals, OE, like anything else, has its place - it's just a case of knowing how to use it.

As this is an experiment largely in creating unnaturally smooth skin textures, I have to say 'I don't like it.' I would prefer to see her skin as it is naturally. But for an exercise in PP I think you have done it well.

Hi Ramdan,

I think I know which look you're going for with the blown out effect. I think it's called a kicker or a rim light (rim light is more of halo type light where kicker is to give a little 'kick' to the subject compared to the surroundings). In my experience it's easier to acheive with direct bare flash. Place the flash at some distance from the subject, 2 meters maybe. You can bouce the spill back into the face.
Maybe try to put the kicker on the right side, in this pose and framing, and bounce it back on the left side of the face. I might have to use black card board or cloth to flag off the light from hitting the lense directly.

I did a workshop for this one too. More or less same process as the last one so nothing major. Just thought I'd try it out.

Cheers,
Jens

Well thought and well composed. I really like the natural expression and natural beauty.
