Hi Folks,

I've read about using a reversed lens for macro shots and am amazed by the outcomes. I’ve been taking macro shots using compact camera, set in macro mode and a D-SLR with a macro lens.

This is one of the shots taken using a compact and this
is one of those taken using a macro lens on a D-SLR.

For the one I posted here today, I was experimenting with a reversed lens technique to see what difference it would make.

With a 1:2.8 100mm macro lens mounted on the camera body, I reverse attached a 50mm fix lens, (i.e both lenses are facing each other front-to-front). I opened the fix lens to the widest aperture.

I used a special tape to attach the lenses so that I don’t have to hold the 50mm lens like holding a magnifying glass for the macro lens that was mounted to the camera.

I know there are tubes and adapters that let you actually reverse mount two lenses together, but I don't have any, and I wanted to see if the technique would work.

With my right hand holding the camera with two lenses and set in a manual mode, I let the red weaver ant bite my pointing finger on my left hand….and took few shots.

This is one of the outcomes that I am satisfied with….a super-shallow DoF,

I really like the result, and yes, the effects are different from those in the links. Here I can see more details on the ant’s face/head with detailed texture on the saw-like fangs and tiny ‘hairs’. The detail texture on the tiny compound eyes is almost visible here.

The image here is what I got from what I shot…no magnification or cropping, just resizing for TL posting.

Thanking you in advance for viewing and your kind words.

Agoes

p/s: I posted a WS of a more ferocious look of this red weaver ant with the fangs wide opened, penetrating into and like doing an incision on my finger skin.

Hi Agoes - I'm really quite stunned by both the technique and the result.

I remember reading about this "reversed lens" technique on a shot done by Jens/Headlessguy a while ago and it's great to see another example.

Wonderful note and an incredibly image - and well done on the self-sacrifice aspect as well :-) The details of that bite really are extraordinarily clear. Did it hurt?? :-)

With those details superbly captured, and ouch! the action that added an impact, I totally agreed with Richard.

An incredible result, indeed. Expecting another blowing shots from this technique.

Congrats...

Agoes,
Hahaha...this is great! I appreciate the time that you took to wrote the notes about the reverse lens technique although I am not surprised my your results. I have one of your other shots marked as one of my favorites. This looks just as painful as the other shot. This one will also be marked as a favorite. At some point, you have got to be thinking...."No more!"
Great job.....it's the perfect example of why I like TrekLens so much!

What an awesome effect Agoes, and what an achievement to make this shot out of the combined lenses. Wow!

This is something I'd like to try but I can't even master basic macro shots yet, so ... I'll keep practicing the basics for a while.

Incredible detail, and in all of this you haven't forgotten your composition and your lighting angle!

super cool Weiyos, you did great capturing your sacrificing finger....you always got good results

Hello Agoes,

Fantasztikus életkép! Ritka az így elkapott pillanat, és ilyen minőségben.
Tetszik!
Gratulálok Laci

Really impressive technique - both in terms of the creative way you added the lenses together and then the subject you've chosen to use this microscoping(if macro=lifesize then bigger than lifesize = micro?). And suffering for your art as well - a true streak of creative genuis!
Thanks for sharing (and inspiring)
