[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Actually visiting the Gobi Desert, blew all my preconceptions about it out of the water: or sand, in this case. Mostly it consists of stony rocks, & dry steppe. These sandhills in the bg, are not representative of the Gobi, at all. They're around 450 km long, & piled up on the southern side of a valley, between 2 parallel mountain ridges. You can see part of the mts, on the far left horizon. The camels are domesticated by the nomadic people that move around Mongolia. Taken early morning. Just as we were leaving the herders marched them across the horizon single file. Would have been a fantastic image.

The dunes are known as the Singing Sands, or Khongoryn Els. (The wind makes a strange noise, when blowing the sand around). They are amongst the highest dunes in the world, at 800 metres. More info on the Gobi / Gurvansaikhan national park here:

"The Gobi, which is about about 1,000 miles in extent from east to west and about about 600 miles from north to south, has a total area of 500,000 square miles. The Gobi is the world's largest cold winter desert, made up mostly of mountains, rocks, grasslands, salt flats and sand dunes."

"These dunes are 20 km wide, and 100-450 km long, and up to 800 m high. Individual dunes reach heights of up to 30 m. Mongolia 's largest sand dunes."

I tried climbing them, but only made it 2/3 of the way up. I didn't want to have a heart attack with the nearest hospital 2 days away!

The camels are 'Bactrian' or 2 humped, in contrast to the Dromedary or one humped camels, of West Asia & Australia. I was surprised to learn that most Mongolian camels are not wild, but domesticated, hence the enclosure & reins.

Singing Sands, that makes my phantasy work. The places you have seen Chris.

So this then is a steppe-scape -- love the wide open space and those silly camels, but they sure are handy in these conditions.

Beautiful work as far as compo and colours go, Chris. I like the front camel with its beak open, and the one behind the pole with his flattened "bumps". Indeed, the single line of camels would have made a wonderful shot, especially backlit by a setting sun ;o). But in this shot, the low sun provides a nice lighting as well.

those are weird humps! They are really different from Indian camels!
