[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I'd like to show you a shot of this interesting young woman.
She's a member of the Kayan, a group of the Karenni people, a Tibeto-Burman ethnic minority of Myanmar (Burma). They are also known as Padaung. In the 1990s, due to conflict with the military regime in Burma, many Kayan tribespeople fled into neighbouring Thailand. There they live with an uncertain legal status in the border area.

Women of the tribe wear ornaments known as neck rings, brass coils that are placed around the neck. These coils are first applied to young girls when they are about five years old. Each coil is replaced with longer coils as the weight of the brass pushes down the collar bone and compresses the rib cage. As more rings are added, the neck begins to lengthen.

This young lady was a little sad as you can see in her face - and I never saw a Padaung woman laughing or smiling, don't ask me why ...

I hope you like it, thanks for looking.

Hi Wishnu,
interesting! I remember I saw someday a documentary about Karenni people. Very unusual style of life for us, but daily life for them. Nicely seen and presented!

Kindly regards,
Ioana

Hi Wishnu! You are lucky to have seen such interesting culture. I've read and watched them but I haven't seen them in person. Lovely colors. Good focus. I pity her. TFS,
Freddie :)

hola Sabine,
magnífico retrato,
detalles y excelente pov.
increíble práctica...

Nice shot.
Good note, but why do they do that? What's the purpose, cultural I guess, but it must have some usefulness in its kind.

this type is seen on both discovery and NG channels pretty often. it seems one of most interesting and mysterious subjects.

Well done.
Tom

They don't laugh or smile, because their neck is getting longer! I would think that would be SO heavy! So sad, even though she is beautiful! She would have lots of pain as she grows!

Hi Wishnu

I saw some of these women in neighboring Thailand, at Mae Hong Son. Wonderful colour & sharpness, in this superb portrait. Tfs!

Hi Sabine, fascinating portrait of a lovely girl, great expression, very well done, have a great week end, ciao Silvio

Hi Sabine,
This is a sad picture. Not because you took it, you did your 'job' as photographer, but the story behind this poor woman. Why do woman suffer for the beauty? Why all those tears? Is it worthy? I don't think so. The torture of the rings must be terrible, the pain sometimes unbearable. Why Sabine? Nevertheless you wrote a fair note which I appreciate and I know as long as we are posting this kind of "interesting" deprave pictures I wouldn’t be come better at all. Yours is fair and well seen with the perfect sharpness and colours. Well seen my dear Sabine; no hard feelings at all.
Hans

Hi Sabine,

I've heard and seen documentaries of these people. Very interesting.
A great portrait showing how strong culture and tradition can be!

Very well done

Would you smile having to wear these rings for life ?

:(

Sorry Wishnu, there are things , that I simply cannot understand. Beauty is indeed relative. Some traditions are weird to us. That being said , I have to admit , I am not enthousiast seeing all these weird piercing and tattooes today !

I like simple and natural beauty. Ornaments and jewelry for special occasions OK. But for life...... I do not see the point and use honestly.

Enough wining (^_^). A great photo , portrait showing well the natural sad expression of this lovely young lady. Just looking at her , sadness is filling my heart immediately.

Well done .
Robert

Hello Wisnu

Thanks for sharing this picture. It is a hard to understand tradition these Kayan peoples have. I wonder how and why it started in the first place.
Nice picture and nice subject.

hi Sabine,
yes,I agree with ya, they are really interesting people,
the traditional that we never know to understand for what and why.
very nice portrait and big thx for you share this portrait to us.

Fist a beautiful photo and a nice pose
Do they belong to the long necks? How also live in Thailand.
I am always amazed what people do to beautify them self
Even when it hurts or is unhealthy
If we think about acupuncture in contradiction with earrings
Tattoos for life unless we know it just fancy in a short period
Now we have the for ever young botox people in western world
Not able to live what life give them
They will die old with a young face and old hands
Who is fooling how?
No improvement at all to the tribes you show us

"This young lady was a little sad as you can see in her face - and I never saw a Padaung woman laughing or smiling, don't ask me why ..."
Well, there's no reason they should be smiling or laughing when they have to go through the physical torture of wearing those neck rings. In fact, I have heard that these women are still practicing the wearing of these rings simply to get tourist money in, not for carrying on traditions or anything. It's very sad.
Technicalities: the colors and contrasts are just amazing. Excellent lighting from the back-side, great detail and clarity. The cropping and framing for this is perfect. Good shallow depth of field too. I am glad that you did not get her to smile or anything as these women are clearly oppressed and unhappy. TFS.

Hi Sabine,
Great colors and angle. I love that her eyes are shut. Nice crop and note.
well done,

Hello Wishnu,
Its a beautfiul photo of this young lady, the colors are wonderful. I did see a documentary of these people and I think most of them are sad . They want to be free and from what I heard most of them would like to be free from wearing the rings. Theres is a sad story I think.

Thanks for the photo. It is very beautiful.

Hi Sabine

This is a lovely picture but so sad as well. You have captured her mood wonderfully. I know how I would feel about such constraints but I guess the only people who know how these women feel about this tradition is them themselves. It is a well exposed and captured portrait

Bonjour
