Today I'd like to continue my serie of interesting people of the world.
Thanks for your feedback to the Padaung Woman I showed before.

So many of you told me the thoughts when seeing women of this tribe with the heavy neck rings. I think at a time they were very proud to wear them and to be a Padaung.
But then the tourists came - and now they feel like animals in a zoo, not longer like normal humans.

It is believed that wearing the coils was once a ritual of the Padaung tribe of Myanmar, an area neighboring Thailand, formerly called Burma. Various origins of the custom are cited, ranging from protection against animal attacks to symbols of wealth and status. One myth tells of a beautiful dragon with a long neck that was impregnated by the wind to produce the first Padaung people. Early explorers to the original homeland of the tribe referred to the "Giraffe Women" of the area. Today, some guides tell tourists that the coils were worn to keep tigers from biting the heads off women working the fields.

Reports from Padaung women today are less mythical: many say they wear the coils simply because it was the tradition of their mothers and grandmothers to do so; others find great beauty in the custom; and a growing number, when questioned by interviewers from outside the area, have said that the rings are uncomfortable and only worn to increase the family income.
The rings are placed around the necks of young girls as young as five or six, and are progressively replaced until they weigh as much as 5 kg.

So I also have to say sorry to them, I also looked at them and made shots - but I asked first (and gave money after making the shots).

I hope this was an interesting post for you all and you enjoyed the trip to the exotic people of the South of Burma with me.
Thanks for any words ...

Guntram

Who can account for traditions in other countries?? People here in American Tattoo themselves ALL OVER and I think it's terrible, but they do it and they like it! They have freedom to choose. These girls don't have the freedom, so sad! Wonderful shot Sabine! Thanks for bringing this to light!
B-)

Hi Sabine:
Very interesting portrait of this very beautiful young woman...
her tight lips and eyes stand out most...
I think in most non-western coutries women get serious when you take their image...am I correct?
Excellent work!

Hi Sabine. Although you have some hot spots here, its not matter at all. Those intense glance will kept you look at them. Would like to visit this place probably in this year or next, any advise ?

Hi Sabine,
Interesting portrait, indeed traveling around the world gives a lot of diferent impressions. I'm not going to repeat my words of yesterday. The woman looks 'neutral' but has an intrigue glance in her eyes. Well captured my dear Sabine! Excellent colours too and your note is again very interesting!

Fabelhaft gemacht!

Nicely composed image with speaking eyes. Relaxed expression is remarkable though the neck is heavily ornamented. An informative commentary note is useful to understand the picture more. Well done Sabine.

Thanks for sharing this image.

This is a superb portrait Sabine and I like the delicate way that you interacted with these people showing them respect. The light in her eyes is wonderful and your notes much interesting. Thanks,
Claudine

I like this picture better than the first part of the series, Sabine. My brother-in-law also visited these peoples. Let's hope tourism does help to create better conditions for them.
Nice portrait!

Hallo Sabine,
Gruss..Sky
