| In 1997, Moorpark College studied abroad in Nepal. We live in Marpha, but most classes were in Jomsom. It took me 1 1/2 to 2 hours to walk there. There were two choices, the rocky Kali Gandaki river bed, or the high narrow path above (with a few feet really, really, narrow). One day walking back, we found the bridge across the river washed away. We could have walked back to the start of the higher trail, almost all the way back to Jomsom, or climb the mountain here, to the other path. The wind blows 50 miles an hour almost all day. It is cold, and soon will be dark. I crawled up literally. I reached the top, looked down and froze. My teacher reached down and yanked me up on the path. Now he is helping the next person. Next day I watched Nepalis walk up this same slope like it was nothing to them. (scanned from a photograph) |
