| Treking in the Himalayas is a lot of temperature, ethnic groups, and landscape changes. Here it is barren rock with mist and snow, mossy mountains and evergreen forest all visible at once! Ladders to the roof provide a surface to pile firewood, dry crops, hang laundry, and whatever else you might need a flat surface for. The roof usually are beams with twigs piled on them, sealed with adobe. (When I lived in Marpha in 1996, I had to climb a ladder like this, in the dark of night, with freezing wind blowing to reach a tiny room with the toilet on the roof.) Heavy rains are uncommon, and can dissolve the roofs. |
