Excellent details here Karen! You got that camera to pic up a lot of patterns and textures on these rocks! I like this a lot!

Hi Karen, sorry, but I don't agree with those who commented above me.
I'm not sure if you have focussed very well here. With such unmoveable objects, I'm surprised that they really aren't overly sharp. Flowers taken outside can move in the wind - but rocks don't.
Did you use a tripod and or a remote switch to take the photo?
The composition is fine and that centre one looks like a pumice rock too.

Hello Karen,
It isn't always the photographers intention to capture all the image in sharp focus. Here, the very centre is sharp which acts like a funnel to draw the eyes to that part.
The central details are well recorded with good information regarding texture and colour.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Karen,
I like the textures you have captured, but as Janice points out...a little unsharp.
I find I get better results with macros when I choose a much smaller F stop.
I see you used f/5.6, 1/400, I would suggest f/11, 1/100 or f/16, 1/60.
These settings would give you an improved depth of focus, hence better perceived sharpness.
Of course a tripod is essential.
I hope this is some help to you.
I had a 'Senior Moment' the other day, I made a WS of the little girl by the taxi.
I got sidetracked (which happens a lot lately), thought I had posted it, and promptly deleted it from my temp folder.
I do like the pic, so I'll try another WS now.
Cheers,
Pete.

Hello Karen,
I am no expert in macro but imo you can go either way in a general manner : a very small aperture as Peter suggests would get you to show more rocks in focus , of course this reduces the speed ( a tripod becomes necessary in poor light for ex) or use, as is the case here , of a large aperture which will give a shallower DOF increasing the shutter speed in the process .IMO it's a personal thing , the choice is yours ,i, for one , would do it as you did since the light seems rather flat and your angle of shoot seems like a simple view over this small group of 'rocks '( probably bigger than pebbles i guess ) these are factors to consider , just what the choice you made infers : you did show some depth ( imo not enough ) in isolating the one piece of rock in the central part of your composition ( i'd change its position slightly though to place it a bit more off-center toward the left bottom corner for ex ) and with F/5.6 ( even one stop down ) still allowing it to appear focused ( center focus on the middle part of it and a slight increase in sharpening to bring it out from the rest )the surrounding bits gradually fading out in the distance .Well i think it looks good , it could use a little brightening and contrast as well though , all in all not a bad macro , Karen ,the choice will always be yours obviously it will have to be the right one ! Keep experimenting my friend ,
Thanks ,C
