Geisha Girl I
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
One of my favorite things to do with my camera is to go to cosplay conventions. To the uninitiated one, a cosplay is a pun on the term 'costume' and 'play', and originated in Japan. It's fairly popular nowadays in the Philippines, and most conventions focus on anime, which hints on it's popularity with the masses.
This girl - silly me I forgot her name - is becoming a popular cosplay icon for her dressing up as a geisha. She's become so popular that photographers often hound her asking for photos, to which she always gives us the nod.
I am a fan of ambient lighting, and here, as with most portraits, I worked with a 50mm f1.4 wide open. I know guys, I could have used a wider aperture, but that defeats my purpose of working with ambient light because I would have to resort to fill-flash.
PS. I'll remember her name next time. And I found her in another convention - took her photo then
with my FM2n. Rolls coming in due time. |

Nobody seems to have pointed out that her eyes aren't sharp ... sorry mate, must be something to do with the slow shutter - or it may be that the wide aperture prevented focus from hitting the right spot. At f/1.4 even a centimetre or two can make the difference between sharp- and not-sharp.
Don't know what your ISO was, but you have a reasonable camera, you maybe could've bumped that up so you could have a faster shutter and smaller aperture.
I find the signature very distracting - I know you want it to look professional, but in my experience most pros don't put a signature like that on their work! Nor does it prevent anyone from stealing shots. ;)

Hey Jo,
What a coincidence. I have a picture of the same geisha from Robinsons' Mall. I have to find it though. The group must hit the malls of MM on a periodic basis. I agree with Rew's comments. I remember raising the ISO to about 600 when I took an identical photo of her. Best regards...
