The word "nudibranch" comes from Latin nudus meaning "naked", and Greek brankhia meaning "gills". The name is appropriate since the dorids (infraclass Anthobranchia) breathe through a branchial plume of bushy extremities on their back, rather than using gills. By contrast, on the back of the aeolids in infraclass Cladobranchia there are brightly colored sets of tentacles called cerata.
This particular specie is Nembrotha kubaryana that can grow up 120mm long, and seems to range in colour. Essentially black with green pustules, or green longitudinal ridges, there is a bright orange border to the foot and around the oral lappets. In some specimens the rhinophores and gills have orange markings but in others, these are green. In Western Australia the black background region can have pinkinsh orange spots or elongate marks. They feed on ascidians. |

Beautiful fluorescent colors on this shell less snail. I showed this to my partner who is a diver and he got excited about diving in Davao. Can't wait to be there in '08.
