Ati, Kalibo, Aklan

I was in a festival called 'Ati-atihan' (to be like the Ati) in Kalibo in the province of Aklan. Ati-atihan is considered to be the 'mother' of all Philippine festivals - similar to Mardi Gras and Carnivale - with floats and costumes, drumming, dancing in the streets, drinking, and more dancing. It is supposed to celebrate the coming together of the Ati (which were the natives of the islands that soon comprised the Philippines) and the immigrant Borneans back in the 13th century. Later on, as the islands became a colony of Spain and became collectively called the Las Islas Filipinas (after King Philip) or the Philippines in the 16th century, the celebration of the Infant Jesus was infused into the festival.

Philippine aboriginals however, no matter how they are celebrated in this festival, like any other native peoples in the world, are marginalized ... and consequently, they have a hard time coping with modernity and are reduced to begging and alcoholism. It is changing though, they have now organizations that are suing the government for their ancestral domains.

This particular 'Ati' was roaming the streets of Kalibo, begging during the festival. She was inebriated. She posed for a photograph after I gave her a few pesos. I realized later that she is wearing a crucifix - and like the festival, truly a amalgamation of paganism and Christianity.

Processed for 'old black/white' using Nik Filters.
