St. Paul Subterranean River, Palawan
This group is already on their way back from the 4 km mark inside the underground river in Palawan. (I took this shot midway through the allowable course )
It is the longest subterranean river in the world, 8.2 km are navigable but tourists are only allowed up to the 4km mark. You have to get a special permit if you want to go beyong that.
The guides discouraged us from bringing cameras inside because:
* its pitch black inside anyway and the only source of light is a weak "spotlight"
* its a very wet place, water is constantly dripping from the cave ceiling.
I told myself I did not come all the way here just to leave my camera outside so I set it to max aperture (f1.8), make sure the flash will fire, and hoped for the best...
I was sitting at the very end of the boat, btw, so now you can imagine my POV :D
It was a very surreal experience. You should try it some time :D
More...
In case you do get to Palawan and ride one of these, insist on sitting at the end of the boat. When the guide is shining the light forward, it gets very dark at your end. Its very eerie yet peaceful. You'll also get to feel the splashes of the large eels hunting bats and birds |

Great shot Allan! It worked well.
4km inside the underground river ... that's a long long way, I would feel distinctly claustrophobic in there!

I am truly impressed by the control over the lights in this photo. Yes, without light lenses it would have been more difficult. Keep up good work!

Mabuhai Allan,
What makes this great was the colourful boat against the rather monocromatic BG. And the reflection as a bonus.
