What was supposed to be a typical business/pleasure/vacation trip for my family, almost turned into a nightmare. We got into town as a major storm codenamed "Paeng" blew into the northeastern section of the counrty. It was running smack at my vector of Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya and Isabela provinces
It was harrowing in the sense that there was little that you could do to minimize the effects of the storm. It came in with rain at almost 11 pm last 29th of October and the downpour lasted 4 hours. By 2 am whilst the whole family was asleep I woke up to unfamaliar sounds, something like bowling balls hitting other bowling balls returning thru a conveyor belt. As I ventured out to look and with no power in the whole area, I was engulfed by a sense of awe and fear at the same time...
The water had risen to barely 10 feet away from the house and the raging waters were knocking the large rocks and boulders underneath the swollen creek...it sacred me that, given more rain the house could be swept away and so I woke up everyone to pack and place the provisions and clothings back into the SUV in case we needed to go to higher ground...perhaps to the fishpond staff house some 700 meters away...but what if the rough road was also turning into a creek? I just couldn't bear the thought that trouble was amost definite...I just had to believe we weren't...I had to keep my head...
I then prayed like never before...asking God for my family's protection and give me the foresight and wisdom to move when I had to move.
Continously until the next 4 hours I checked if the rain water from the mountains was still rising every 15 minutes....then when I knew, that i knew, that we were safe did I let everyone sleep again...
I stood guard...praying even asking Maia to stand with me in prayer and while holding onto my faith, I knew somehow this was a test....by 5 am the rains have stopped. And the raging creek was not as violent as it was and so I slept with peace in my heart that God had answered my prayers.
Taking stock of the event, I heard from the other fellows that two stone bridges were swept away...one bridge near our house was hallowed out...this is where i was standing...this hasn't happened in over twenty years this land has been with the family...enough reason to thank the Lord and praise his Name...and also time to count your many daily blessings! |

What a scary storm story Raul. Good to hear you and your family are safe. Mother nature can wreck havoc especially if its resources are not used without regards for preservation. Lovely composition here showing the cascading water. Best wishes. Danilo
