[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
"The World War II Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Manila contains the largest number of graves of American military dead of World War II, a total of 17,202, most of whom gave their lives in the operations in New Guinea and the Philippines."

{taken and adapted slightly from the website of the American Battle Monuments Commission}

Before leaving Manila this morning I visited this cemetery and was struck by the sheer scale of the memorial and the burial grounds.

Whatever anyone thinks of War, here lie the remains of 17,202 people who died fighting in WW2. To come here and remain unmoved would, I believe, be impossible. Row after row after row of simple white crosses and Stars of David for the Jewish victims. Simple and incredibly moving.

The whole area is kept in immaculate condition which, compared to the slums and decay of surrounding Manila, adds to the impact of this sombre memorial.

Lest We Forget, indeed.

Shot in RAW, converted to jpeg, slight crop and contrast adjustment.

Marvelous POV!

Nice choice of B&W tone.

Great contrast between the crosses and the grass and dark trees.

Well done
Tom

Kilted,
Perhaps a wonderful clinic on perspectives and B&W. This is a very fine image in every aspect. The row of trees also help this photo but I think the row of monuments command my attention the most here. This is a very well thought out image. Well presented notes and overall, "you nailed it"!

A beautiful shot Richard. Great B&W tones, and a superb composition. Very moving foreground, and a background showing progress and growth. Those who sacrificed their lives should always be respected and appreciated. TKS for sharing. Sam
