[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My morning walk to and from the Leveriza Street apartment took in CCP, Gil Puyat, F. B. Harrison, and, finally, a return through the squatters' settlement on Gotamco Street.

I was warned not to go down those streets; even worse, to walk along them with my camera out. But my personal experience was that they were warm, open, honest people making the most of a tough life. I never once felt threatened.

This is life for probably millions of Filipinos; not as desperately poor as the homeless, but on the edge of it. Unable to buy or rent a place to live, they construct homes on the sidewalks - using salvaged plywood, corrugated iron, whatever they can find. Some, unable to pay for electricity, splice wires into the overhead lines. With no running water, many draw their daily needs from fire hydrants. Many immerse themselves in tambayan, the Philippines' national pasttime: watching the world pass by.

Another snapshot, and nothing spectacular, but it is a look into a world very different from my own, and for that reason this shot holds meaning for me.

I have posted an alternative and another alternative as workshops.

PP - crop, sharpen, added gradient at the top of the frame.

Hi Rew

A superb daily life scene amply illustrating this impoverished neighbourhood of Manila. Good sharpness & colour. The diagonal road at right adds good linear perspective & dynamism. Tfs!

Thanks Rew for sharing their world with us. We are so blessed here in NZ. At least our poor have govt handouts.
It looks like they are maybe trying to sell from their doors too.
I can't critique the photo, but you have got me thinking of these people and life in the Philippines.
Thank you
Janice

hi Rew,
intriguing shot, full of interesting scenes all along the eye path.
but why that dark cloud on the top??

cheers

hi rew.

this is awesome. it draws the viewers attention from the door to the left till the end of the road. it seems like every inch of it had a story to tell. the selected DOF works very well with this compo. well done, my congratulation. (not just with the compo but with the risk you have taken in going to the place)

roald

rew,

as always, your POV will always be unique from us pilipinos. with great respect, you have embraced it and understand the tradition and the way of life. your compositions hold meaning to us from distant places. it humbles us. it reminds us of our beginnings. nicely done kaibigan ko. mabuhay ka lage.

y2koSan

typical street of a poor neighborhood. Though some of the things you mentioned were true, some are not. NOT everyone of them are outlaws. You've only seen the 'face' of it. You've got to live with them for at least a day to understand why they are in such state of life. Your note imo is a judgment error.

*burned upper part of your image is unnecessary and too distracting.

Rew, i can't afford to miss your Philippines travelogue series. besides appreciating your great shots i take note of your informative & guiding notes.....for i am going to visit there before year end.

to me this is a common sight. but the beauty of your capturing it and the way you narrate really add a highly journalistic flavour to your work.

just wondering, out of my ignorance, why is the top part blackened?

I'm kind of speechless looking at this shot Rew. I know poverty exists everywhere in the world, but of course we see nothing like this in Canada. So sad to see.
Thanks for giving us a glimpse into daily life on that street. As always, your great note is what really makes the shot come to life.

Another capture that brings back memories. I also walked all through this area with no problems at all, just smiles and friendship. It was one of those time when I wished I could win a huge lottery. You've shown the community very well!!! Thanks! Have a great day!

Nice street light photo.Good composition.Color & Sharpness are also good.

nice composition Rew, again an image that tells a story of some of our kabayans.they have a reason why they are in those levels of life. for that reason there is no option but to survive and tackle the challenges of life, what ever it maybe Filipinos don't
deny it but faces them with courage.TFS.

Good image of the human condition here. A look at another part of the world from a different perspective. Your composition draws me through the picture wanting to see what is further back. Thanks for venturing with you camera.

The content of your description is touching and as good as the photo itself Rew. I think the first of the 2 workshops would have been worthy of a seperate post. The 2nd one was charming of the family but of course a bit distracting with the gentleman cut out. Thanks for sharing this portion of the world with us! God's best!

Hello Rew
Henri Cartier Bresson, the late French photographer used to take such interesting daily lifes in black and white with the ancestor of the Leica camera!
He walked incognito as you did and that's how he photographed true expressions.
Very informative picture and note.
Best regards.
Robert
