I know now that Russia touched my soul. I was in a near dream state for the 7 days I was in Moscow, This photo is an attempt to bring those soulful feelings out. History deep in the ground as the winter white cleanses everything. The Golden Dome reminds us of greatness and warmth and richness. The color red (krasnaya in Russian) also means beautiful. The Novodevichiy Convent provides peaceful reminder that you are just a passenger on the grand cycle of life, Mother Russia has her lessons. No wonder that she is worshipped and loved so deeply. A glorious winter's day is a great gift. We have seen things as they were . . . today we can see things as they CAN be.

Russian dreams . . . deep into the night. The promise of life, the proof of death, the circle of the universe.

The composition is superb, and the DOF excellent. I also like the colors which arise from the gray tone.

jolie contraste entre la neige et le batiment d'arriere plan!
exellent POV !
bye....tanbinh.

Very strong composition, David. You've captured the ray of sunshine on the dome at the right time. Great job!

Quelle magnifique photo!

This is a great composed shot, dramatic with the darker colours, the foreground is just as nice as the background. The church gives a little colour to this picture and I like it very well, nice seen, nice done, David !

this is very interesting the coffin is above ground? with the headstone, while in america we are have the coffin underground, is the ground to cold?

i likve the architecture of the russian house in the background of this surrel photo

What a fantastic contrast we have here!!! Great photo, specially because you haven't done any pp on this to get that light and those colours! Wonderful!
Russia did touched your soul, I've seen that you've changed your intro photo into a more Russian thing ;)
Well done
Ana

Hi David, everything has already been said. It leaves me in awe.

Great composition David - massive and delicate, black and gold, snow and gloomy skies - everything works in this picture.

Come to St.Petersburg one day, you will discover yet another facet of Russia, altogether different from Moscow (and those two cities are just a tip of an iceberg anyway - this country is vast).

David, I would have to agree with you on your note. Very rich colours, but a dark and horrible history behind these colours. Nice perspective on your series of Russia. Thanks

This is superb picture: the composition is outstanding and the touch of light on the red wall and golden dome add warmth as the blue icon on the tombstone adds hope to this grey chilly day.
Being russian I understand your feeling and thoughts about Russia very much. But the thing is that when we say 'Russia' we often mean 'Moscow' and vice versa, though to my regret the rest of Russia does not shine as much. And of course not all russian cemeteries look like Novodevichiy one. In fact this is the most 'prosperous' cemetery in Russia (after the Big Kremlin Wall burials, I guess) where the most famous people are buried and the tombstones made by well known sculptors.
You've seen the best of Russia and I'm glad you like it. If you ever decide to know the Russia more I'd suggest to take a trip down the Volga river. Those places are the very soul of this beautiful country.

Excuse me, but it is fascinating what has of beautiful in this picture
you can observe the rich detail of the construction to the bottom
the tower in gold, and to see a cross well closely and to think that is part
of a cemetery.
A respected culture.

Beautiful composition David, and the colours contrast very effectively against the dark tones and snow.

I was there just a month before you and there was also heavy snow that time.I visited the same cemetery and liked there very much.I post some pics to TE of that place.your pic is perfect exposured and the compo is very powerful, gives the atmosphere of the cemetery.
