[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last night my friend's girlfriend kindly agreed to be a model for me, so we headed down to the Clarke Quay area of Singapore looking for locations.

After doing the usual subway-type shots we went for a drink and a few games of pool - and this bar turned out to be the best location of all...a lucky break because the subway shots didn't turn out at all well :-(

I guess here I was trying for a grainy look, something dark, maybe showing the atmosphere of a dingy pool hall. Trying for the impression of a bored girlfriend wishing she could move on to a nicer bar. I don't think the bored look is quite there, but this was our first time so I'm not too unhappy.

Ly had never posed for photographs like this before...and as I am very poor at explaining what I'm looking for, I didn't get a high number of usable shots.

Shot in RAW, cropped, WB adjusted to "white flourescent light", jpegged, converted to greyscale then sepia in CS2, resized, sharpened.

No noise reduction.

ISO 1600, f2.8, 1/60

Howdy Kilted Arab!
Amaizng girl, nice pose. Wonderful perspective. Original composition. Very good capture. Fantastic effect.
TFS!

This is a nice photo, but sometimes it takes a while to get to "know" your model, as you have May, and that is why your pics of her are so good! Technically, I like everything, except her expression, which kinda looks like the smile Shelby gives me when she is laughing at me! But overall a good start!

Beautiful capture with nice grain! I like it. Perfect composition and pose:) She really looks tired...

Greetings

Hi Mr A

Some good elements in this. The location is excellent! The composition - of pool table, and placement of Ly, is very good. The sharpness is good, and excellent use of available light.

I guess it could have been cropped a little more to exclude the bright lights at the top of the frame, and maybe cut off the ball on the right (that sounds odd.)

Ly has done a good job as a model, it just looks a little as if she's unsure whether to smile or not, I think a completely relaxed face would be better but that's just my preference.

Very nice portrait work!!

I agree with Pozaru on the lights especially the EXIT light. Now as far as the model is concerned that look very well captured and presented. She does a good job jor you - well posed.

Richard,

It has the beginnings of something interesting. I don't like the light above her head, the pool player with his head in her shoulder, the noise is not very nice - lots of sensor artifacts in the form of horizontal lines, it needs more contrast and I'm not keen on the colour cast.

The exit sign is a good inclusion. Her expression could be a little more bored and perhaps it would have helped if she didn't look straight into the camera and relaxed her face a little.

I've done a workshop to illustrate what I say.

I hope you like it and I hope you don't mind.

Hi Richard
I like the grainy look for this kind of shot, and it goes well with the Sepia. The DOF is excellent. I would try to get rid of the bright light at the right. Actually, I think she looks very natural and kind of bored too. I hope its not from posing :-)
Good work

Richard, I like the title as it fits the photo to a T.
Technically from my perspective everything is well done, even your models expression.
Funny I read the other comments, but I feel her expression fits the title, its a noncommital expression which I see in a lot of teens I work with but usually its implying "can I go Now"
Wayne

Those upper lights are a bit distracting and I've made a WS.
I love the overall atmosphere.

thanks,

ps.I'll be back with points

Hi Richard, You are winning over a few models now, and this one is excellent in my view. It could be out of a movie, as you have captured the atmosphere very well. It has a grainly look in the background which doesn't detract as it seems like an oriental vision of Casablanca! TFS. Murray.

Great pose! I love the look you captured.
I think the one change I'd have liked to have made is to get more of the fellow in the BG into the shot (ie. his head and shoulders)
Great use of the available light

Hi Richard,
Another creative shot. I like the grainy look that perfectly match the light and mood of this shot.
A very nice model... mmm, not so sure about her expression, Richard. But I like her pose.
Thank you very much for sharing.
Ramdan.

Bonsoir Richard,
Excellent portrait of this young billiard girl, very good capture and pose in black & white , composition and contrast in B & W is very well done. Très jolie photo.
Mes salutations
Michel

Hi Richard,

Natural pose of Ly . . Thinking of which angle to take to hole the ball . .
I love billiard - 9 balls game . .
Excellent DoF . . the 15 is very sharp . .
I like low angle of capturing this shot . . the EXIT sign and lamp on the right a bit disturbing . .

I am planning to go to see F1 Singapore in Sept . . if I can get the ticket and hotel . .

Tfs,
TJutjut

Many thanks for your kind words on Eye of grasshopper .

:-)) will be back this afternoon

Hi Richard,
Was a few days in Vienna, so missed some postings, like this one. Like the dreamery glance of Ly, excellent composition and pose. The DOF is perfect, with the blurry balls on the foreground. Great posting my friend!

Hi Richard
Very good shot like the expression and tone. Very good use of DOF to isolate the girl from her surroundings
