My second shot of Ly in a local bar. I've gone b/w this time and cloned out a distracting light after advice on the first shot :-)

I think i prefer the b/w over the sepia in my previous posting. I like the contrast between the pretty Vietnamese girl and the grittier surroundings of a pool hall and the background smoker.

I like the degree of noise in the shot - for me, it suits the image so I didn't use Neatimage. For this shot I also like her looking towards us.

Not sure what else to say, any opinions and advice most welcome!

ISO 1600, f2.8, 1/100

Cropped, WB changed, cropped, jpegged, brightness/contrast adjustment, cloned out a distracting light, resized, sharpened. No noise reduction applied.

I think that there are multiple items that work very well together in this shot. The narrow depth of field along with the black and white tones work well with this low light shot. I don't mind the noise either as it adds to the character of the photo. The light on the subject is perfect and really draws me into the photo. Great shot.

This is simply fabulous! I love the mood here and the composition, with that slightly seedy background watcher, is just perfect. The grain adds to the mood here - very well done

Richard you have created a very effective mood with the B & W, shallow DOF, plus the grain. As you say this is a well dressed young lady is a seedy pool hall and the noise add to the effect. Also glad you cloned the distracting lights. TFS

Hi Richard,
Well caught! Like those sceneries in B&W: they give a good exanple of daily life. Nice focus on the girl and slightly blurred background. Keep on with the B&W stuff!

Cool ... I like this one!

I also prefer b&w over sepia - much! Composition, DOF and POV are all great and the noise, as you say, adds to the mood of it. The blown-out effect of the man in the background, and the strong bokeh blurring his features, does add a certain element of danger and harshness to highlight the apparent softness and vulnerability of Ly.

Really glad you cloned out the light.

I wouldn't mess with it at all...I am stuck trying to figure how to fit it into an ad...my mind thinks like that..it definitely belongs in an ad but for what I don't know...something big time though....perhaps an old smoke ad...or for a whiskey ad...hmmm...hard to tell...maybe it will get you thinking..

Hi Richard,

There are so many things that make this work, great compo, dof, model and scene. It reminds me of a still from a film or and album cover.

I love this one

Tom

Hello Richard.
I really like this photograph. It has an old look. Not only because it is b&w, also the clothes of your models and the bar look oldish.
I like shallow DOF which brings our attention to this nice lady.
Very well composed picture, everything is on the right place.

this is a good scene.. the last portrait was also good.. but here there is the real soul of a bar!! wonderful compo.. use of the b&W is superb!! your friend Ly.. is lovely in this expression.. but what i like more is the atmosfere.. the light over this man in the BG on the right.. the balls over this biliard!! iso 1600 is big.. but noise is perfect for the scene, here... really an excellent mood!! well done!
ciao Marco

Great atmosphere you created here Richard. The expression of ly is great, the position of the blurred ball in the FG leading to the man at the back is spot on. He is maybe a little over exposed. Wonderful photo.

Looks as if they guy might get lucky! HAHA!... I like this better, the girl is saying something with her eyes...the man in the BG adds balance to the shot...and almost completes the story!....all that is left is for you to proceed to the next photo, The Morning After! hee hee!!

Hi Richard,
I like this, as you say it's quite a gritty scene and the noise suits it and adds atmosphere. B&W is good too. I like the composition, with the pool balls in front and the bloke in the background. Nice shot.
Cheers, John.

A very cute pose. She looks full of mischief in this one. The b&w looks very good once again. Very well done!

Hi Richard, Your shots and gallery is getting to be a wonderful mix of styles and show progress from the pack. This scene reminds me of the bar scenes in some old movies, with an Oriental twist which i like. TFS. Murray.

Hello Richard,
I haven't visited your gallery for a while and this one caught my attention amongst your recent photos.
I like it because it seems to tell us a story. It could have been a sequence of a film. The balls on the foreground, the lady in the middle and the blurry man in the background with his intriguing look: a strong combination in which I sense a kind of tension. As if something were about to happen (decisive moment?). The "gritty" black and white treatment enhances that feel.
My only (minor) criticism would be that Ly seems a tad too aware of the presence of your camera. Her eyes could have been more detached from it, rather concentrating on what is going on in this "shabby" bar: on the position of the balls, on the man behind her...
But perhaps, I say this because it does not fit with the story I want to read in this - strong and intense - shot...
TFS & kind regards,
Erik
