[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is Alexis - a friend of a work colleague.

He asked me to take some portrait shots of her and after several disasterous attempts at arranging meetings, we finally managed it last night.

To be honest, I am pretty disappointed by the results - but I am unsure if it is because I am being too critical, or if I was disappointed at the light available (outdoors but very cloudy/dull) or if I've just had a bad day :-)

This was taken prior to the shoot proper, we were sitting around a table in a bar at Clarke Quay and I just started snapping some candid shots.

This is one of those candids - I think the expression is something along the lines of "get that bloody lens out of my face" but trying to say it nicely :-)

ISO 1250, 1/125, f2.8

Shot in RAW. W/B changed, converted to b/w and orange filter added, converted to jpeg, cropped, resized, sharpened. Also fiddled with levels.

maybe yes, a bit too dark but her beauty is perfectly visible.
Wonderful smile, wonderful tight compo.

thanks,
v
ps.This time, no need to flip (she is watching us from the left side)
pps.Just an obsession but, as you say, might become a fetish, lol

Wonderful natural look.
Not too crazy about portraits (I find most too artificial) but this one I really like.
Love the expression.
And love the skin imperfections. Most would have passed this through Photoshop to soften the skin.

i think the lens is a little too sharp for this richard :)
sometimes too much deails on the face may not be a good thing...
do u hav a 80 or 85mm portrait lens? i think you will be more happy with the results

Richard
Think you are right about the expression. This one is just a bit to close for me. But as a candid I'll go along with the tight crop. Dan

Hi Richard,
What are you "competing" with Rew? :-) Great portrait particular the tight crop. Skin tones are almost perfect. Almost? Yes, almost, Alex's nose has a OE spot. Nevertheless, the expresion is great! Wonderful posting my friend!

Richard,
Great portrait, I think the lighting is very good. What I really like about this shot is that I can see the details in her skin. Her expression is great, kind of a grin but not really. Awesome portrait Richard.
Regards,
Kevin

I think you did a great job here. A good professional would have likely done a better job with the lighting, but the portrait is excellent as it is. I would call it "Texture" because it's the skin texture that's the star in this image. Very original and technically sound. As for the gender (see Jan's comment), your line "He asked me to take some portrait shots of and after..." is misleading.

merhaba richard
excellent black white portre.wonderful lovely model.well done.
regards.

Yep I think you must have just had a bad day, because it's a very nice portrait!! A very pretty model, and I like her expression. She has very nice eyes and I like the focus on the closest. Really great detail and the framing is nice. To me her expression is playful. Have a great weekend.

Good shot Richard.

I like the pose, if you can say so about a face shot. Her angle towards the camera works well with the shallow dof. Pretty much the entire side of her face is in focus while the other side of her face is out of focus. Often you'll see these shots where only the eye is in focus and ear, mouth or nose are out of focus.

I think the light is good but the photo lacks contrast and ends up looking a little bit flat.

I did a workshop trying to up the contrast and some other adjustments.

Cheers,
Jens

Hehe ... I like the honesty here Richard. The quirky little smile, and it's a real smile, you can see it in her eyes! Love the little play of hair over her brow. I think the aperture was a little wide for it, the DOF is shallow indeed,
Love the skin textures. Very true.

I so understand the bloody lens thing! Mainly, my first point is that "us ladies" prefer NOT to have every detail of our face showing, ya know? HAHA! Back up! And the older we get, the more BACK you should be...in my case, across the street!HAHA! But I understand portraits are hard and what I like about this is her sly smile! Hope she didn't bop you too hard!
B-)
Linda

as far as i am concerned, i like it fine :) especially the expression, which is the only thing (apart from the excellent black & white presentation) that makes this photo work for me :)

there are times when one feels terrible about a photoshoot... i think thats a good thing... it keeps us on our toes and compels us to do better in the future :)

wonderful work :)
