[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The name of these crabs are not Sentosa Crabs but I photographed them at Sentosa Island in a display under harsh light and behind glass. They were VERY small and moved fast. I had troubles with the exposure and could not meter the bright green sticks and the dark purple colors of the crab adequately to get the perfect exposure but I found that 400 ISO actually worked better than the shots I shot at 120 & 200 ISO. I also had to stand back and zoom in to avoid the reflective light from entering the lens. I think the results weren't the best but that's why i posted it, I'm looking for tips of what I could have done to improve this. this was handheld as a tripod wasn't possible because of the crowded small space I was in and I couldn't control the lighting or the angle I shot this from. Any suggestions?
While trying to ID these guys, I found this:
I think I fared better than this!

We toured Sentosa back in 1999 - what an enjoyable trip it was. Especially on the cable cars!!
Hard to capture through the glass - but not too bad considering... Pretty creatures Scott,

Considering the conditions I think this works well, it's really only the depth of field that I'd change - even crabs should have their eyes in focus (I think) for a good portrait. Of course, dropping the aperture size would've given you an even slower shutter speed, but on the 30D you have the option of cranking the ISO waaaay up, even 1600 on your camera and resized for TL would be noise-free,
I think you did an excellent job on framing and composing the shot, and where it is sharp, it's great!

Just by looking at them I get goosebumps :) very detailed and nicely presented.

WEll done!

Scott I looked at the other photo. and not even close. You should send yours to them to use.
The colors are just amazing, so vibrant.
Considering your circumstance, and the end result I don't think we could offer you any advise. Rew comment noted, but I have found sometimes the glass in a dispaly vreates distortion you do not see at the time which affects the overall sharpness, but this was not a problem here.

Hi Scott,
Talk about a tough exposure. Bright harsh light to complete black in the backround. You managed to get good exposure on the crabs but that sends the neon green off the chart for OE and color saturation. Really good detail for being hand held
under those conditions. Gotta just love that IS. I would have just tried 800 ISO which would have let you go to f8 for more DOF. Other than that, well done under really difficult conditions. You know I would make you use a tripod if I had been there.

Scott

Hi Scott,
Missed this posting for unknown reason. The green colours are great in this shot which is a kind of weird scene of the crabs (craps? :-)
You are asking for tips how to improve. I'm struggling with "through glass pictures" too. What I do is to try several camera settings (no joking about Nikon please) AND different distances with the lens from the glass. Before hitting the shutter button I look closely is there is any unwanted reflection. It depends mostly of the light source if it is succesful or not. But too close to the glass is the worse position, about one feet is the best is my experience. Also a relative large aperture will prevent the reflection, but as in this picture the DOF will be disappointed. Anyway, your try is priceworth and is a reason for a full mark.
Hope this will help you to improve, and if all the tips don't work, consider to buy a real camera: NIKON :-) That will improve your photography anyway!
Hans

Hello Scott,
I do agree with others, that you did great considering the rough conditions. I think if you spent a LOT of time doing PP work on it, that you might be able to make it look better. You could use the burn tool on the crabs' bodies. The details and DOF are both great though.

Thanks for sharing,
Leanne

hi great photo,
yours is way better than theres its all to light!!
its a little bit blury at the front but its still great.
