[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Following on from the positive reaction to this shot - which was initially inspired by this shot from another TL member, I took my camera out yesterday when we were playing with the kids as I wanted to get more unusual angles/wide angled effects in some portraits.

This was a lucky shot - the camera was on my lap as Jess ran towards myself and Mrs A. I just lifted the camera slightly and pressed the button. God Bless autofocus ;-)

That's Wee Hannah climbing in the background.

Shot in RAW, w/b adjusted to 'daylight', converted to JPEG, adjusted to b/w via greyscale' method in CS2, levels adjusted, cropped, resized and sharpened.

ISO 200, f4, 1/5000, focal length 17mm.

I left the tilt because I like it :-)

Hi Richard , I like your B&W conversion , it is very effective , a portrait of happiness that is certain. I also like the tilt , as well the playground BG. I don't really know much of portrait photography , but not hard to see this is a quality photo.
thanks for sharing

Hello Richard
A real cute B&W flagrante!
Well done, I liked it too! :-)
Um abraço , a hug,

What a beautiful, fortunate capture! Her facial expression is adorable and couldn't have been planned better.
Love it!
Tracy

This is where the tilt WORKS for me Richard! And of course, you got a winner because of Wee Hannah, she is after all a queenie! I do like the comp, it seems like her eyes are just a little too dark... I like the "THIS SHOT" pic because of the levels. This seems too contrasted... SO I'm gonna drag it into WS and see what shakes out..in the meantime hum a tune and keep your fingers crossed!

Another great shot of your daughter Richard. I really like the composition and the tilt in this shot. What a beautiful smile and happy expression you captured here. I like the B&W color choice for this as well. I bet this would look great in a frame. Very nice work.
Regards,
Kevin

Hi Richard,

If you can capture an happy expression like here, you better not hesitate, TGF autofocus.
To show that this is a snapshot you probably decided to leave the horizon the way it is here.

I like the artistic unusualness of it - and artistic (artsy?) is the genre it seems to fit. The fact that it was a shot-from-the-hip, literally I guess, says something about art ...

Natural expression.

Hi Richard,
Yep, like the composition, and of course the pose of wee Jess. You are lucky with the brightness, just no OE on Jess's shirt (or what it maybe called) The tilled image makes my eyes looking for mor details, it's quite an "active" impression.
Great posting my friend!
Hans

this reminds me of that broad-sized magazine with quality photos, mostly portraits and mostly about life! (you surely know which magazine.....;) )

this image undoubtly fits to that rigid criteria of high quality portraits/photos.

congratulations, Richard!

Hi Richard.
This is good portrait of a lovely little girl. I really like her expression and shiny eyes. Nice blur of the b/g.
The only remark is the position of your daughter's right hand. It looks very unnatural IMO.

I agree with Linda (and her WS) -- the tilt is great the heavy contrast is not so great
Love the capture

This is very unique and beautiful. It's so much fun watching your kids grow up! Once again the focus on her face and eyes is perfect. Thanks!

Hi Richard,

What a natural, unposed, "off the cuff" (lap) shot! :D She is absolutely adorable. I like the angle as it's unique and very eye catching. Nice that you have big sis in the background too.

She's a cutie!! Can you tell this one "no"? I would have a difficult time doing so.

Enjoy your day with the little ones. Lisa

hi richard.
i'm guessing she takes her looks from her mother?

how do you manage to do it?
i would need a tripod and 6 weeks notice to get an image like this.
i am in awe, yet again.

Great grab Richard and I respect your tilt so no comments on that. Captured the joy of the moment in her eyes. This is a keeper my friend.

of all the elements in this photo, i love the wide-angle-look the most :)

and then the tilt... without the tilt, it would look flat and planned :) and not as spontaneous as this one :)

i really love the black and white tones you got there, and the smooth gradations of light (dynamic range) is amazing :)

she will love this photo once she grows up inshallah :)

Wonderful photo Richard, you have done a great job on the capture of this one, I like it because it kinda looks like its taken from the past, yet looking into the future.. thats the sort of impression it gives me...you can see it in Wee Jess's eyes..Nice light on her fair hair, and good catch lights in her eyes.. well done to you Cuzzy.

Kindest regards and a hug.
Dawn.

Hi Richard, it's a great shot taken from your lap, what a bonny wee girl and the photo looks great in B&W, well captured just shows you it good always to be ready camera on and finger never far away from the button.
Cheers
Donald

Well, difficult to do better than the photo you refer to, Richard (one of my favorite pictures), but I must admit the outcome of your "lucky" shot is very good as well. You at least had the lucidity to press the button, with as a result: the spontaneous look of childhood, appropriately enhanced by the spontaneous tilt (good you didn't rectify this).
Composition, contrasts and light look perfect to me as well. Finally, I approve your choice for B&W. It gives the image a timeless touch.
TFS & kind regards,
Erik

merhaba richard
excellent lovely,portrait picture.
best regards.

I meant to comment when I saw this the other day.
This is definitely what I'd call a 'feel good image'. Your daughter looks very happy, and the fact that she's looking away at 'something' out there, along with the tilt, gives the shot a very spontaneous and candid feel.
Very nice work!

Hi Richard, I like the attitude in the little face you present here. I suspect she has your genes in spades!. A lovely clear timeless sort of portrait. It would be ideal for the Sydney telephone book which carries photos similar to this on the cover these days, showing the health and happiness we see here. TFS. Murray.

Once again a charming and wonderful capture of one of those lovely wee girls, Richard. There is a really interesting quality to Jess’s upturned face that makes it a top notch portrait. What a precious little soul she is and how well you have shown it. Excellent in Black and white.

Hi richard

I've sidestepped your 'pot, kettle, black' & chosen this one. Apart from the slight oe in the highlights on the fg dress, this is great. Perfect sharpness, interesting tilt, & good pov. Tfs!

Hello Richard,

I have to say it again - your daughters are precious:)
I love the way you show them and their world. Children don't take reality as adults do, although they can be really honest about everything, that's why I think your compositions (original POVs, great natural expressions on your daughters' faces etc.) take us closer to kids' world...
Best,
Iza
