The goddess of mercy is also known as "GUAN YIN" (观音) in Chinese. The Chinese word "Guanyin" is an abbreviation of "Guanshiyin" which denotes "seeing the voice of the world" if rendered literally.

Quan Yin is one of the most universally beloved of deities in the Buddhist tradition, personifying Karuna (Sanskrit for compassion) and Prajna (Sanskrit for wisdom).

Original name in Sanskrit is Avalokitesvara. Overtime, also known as Quan'Am (Vietnam), Kannon Bosatsu or Kanjizai or Kanzeon or Kwannon (Japan), Kanin (Bali) and Avalokitesvara, Avalokiteshvara, Lokeshvara (India), and Spyan-ras-gzigs (Tibet).

The controversy: Avalokitesvara who is a male Bodhisattva (Sanskrit for enlightened being) in India was transformed into a goddess in a Chinese male oriented society.(read more about the history at http://ignca.nic.in/ks_41028.htm)
