The latest addition to my boxing theme.

Taken at an event to raise money and awareness of the plight of Cambodian children who live on the rubbish heaps of Stung Meanchey.

"Knee deep in trash, Phnom Penh's poorest families struggle to build a life from what others throw away. They are scavengers, living amid mountains of garbage in Stung Meanchey, the largest trash dump in Cambodia.

Their village, Preak Torl, a cluster of plywood shacks, clings to the dump's edge. Fumes from sewage and burning garbage fill the air. Pigs forage in the village's dirt lanes.

At the dump, garbage trucks plow in and out. When they lift and tilt their basins, it rains trash. People swarm underneath, bags open, competing for the best bits of refuse—recyclables like plastic and aluminum to resell. The pay is 5,000 rial per hour, about 50 cents.

"They work from sunrise to sunset, and sometimes until ten o'clock at night," said Sy Sam, a Cambodian social worker who monitors the dump. "It's most dangerous at night when they can't see what they're grabbing or where they're stepping."

Personally, I like the POV here, the boxer coming at you, we can see his opponent and the watching referee.

Hello Richard this is an excellent image very well composed and nice light, the expressions on the guys are well captured and timing is perfect good dof to get the referee somewhat sharp at f2.8 ;-) some photoshop involved me thinks not sure. Well done for the fund raising and sharing this rgds Necip.

Nice. I like the range of tones; the black and white emphasizes this and makes it and the contrast stand out. I love the lighting! The depth of field is very good, as is the focus. It's well composed; I like how you managed to get both fighters' faces. In my opinion the ref/spectator is a little distracting, though.

Overall, a very powerful image.

Good internal framing of the shot a bit dark but the shot is well composed.

The uber jock in me does not like the Black and White use for this format....that is just a quirk of me I hold true to. Some shots need detail that the color provides to provide a greater degree of animation to those in them. This is why I prefer my sports in color.

Hello Richard!

I love the POV and composition here . The waiting game, the intimidation game too is well captured here.

And all for a great cause, and for fun! Well for these two guys at least, as I presume the enjoy fighting. Me, it is certainly not my cup of tea , If you know what I mean . I prefer to be behind a camera , than behind a pair of gloves (^_^). I hope the event was successful financially for the cause.

Cheers!
Robert

Beautiful image Rich, with an outstanding composition including the three players in strategic positions and with excellent exposure in difficult lighting conditions. All three expressions you captured tell the story of the fight. No place for criticism here, it's an image that should be featured in a photography magazine.

Muy bien, una foto original y con mucha fuerza, la expresión del boxeador es impactante, las luces buenas y un B&W bonito. Saludos! Fran

Wow I am so impressed, this is a great photo! I really like the choice of POV you have here, your DOF is perfect, the boxer coming towards us is in such good detail and the rest of the scene is in a softer focus. You can see the intensity and determination in his face and eyes. I really like the choice of B/W it really bring out the details. You didn't let the overhead lighting blow your shot. This was well composed and shot well. I see big improvements in your photography. TFS

Hi Richard,

That is just great. The look of the boxer, but for me what does it even more is the look of the referee who keeps a very close eye on what is going to happen! I like the DoF and the point of view choosen here. Has to be said that the NeatImage is very visible though not disturbing. I'm only wondering what it is on the left upper arm of the right boxer... Something NeatImage couldn't get its teath in? ;-)
Great shot!!

Greetings, Dennis

This reminds me of an old movie, where the Star is in the fight of his life. It even has an old BW television feel to it! Nice shot, LOVE the POV, you must have been front and center to the fight! I'm not much of a boxing fan, but this pic is superb in the MOOD department!

B-)

don't like boxing (too violent for me, i'm too pacifist ^^) but the composition is really good, as the b&w PP.

Richard
The boxer has a hansome seemingly unmashed face - like he is new or very good at this sport.
I think you are right - you can see his face. Tone are top drawer when you shifted to B&W.

dan

wow, love those expressions..everyone is ready for action.
