The Central Business District of Singapore - where I work. Except I tend not to work at night - at night I tend to roam the subways and underpasses of the city :-)

The golden-hued building in front of the taller buildings is the Fullerton Hotel - a lovely old building which used to be the General Post Office.

This is a bit of an experiment for me, I do next to no night photography. But it's something I want to do more of, so forgive me of a few attempts aren't up to scratch - I'm here to learn!

"The first records of settlement in Singapore are from the second century AD. The island was an outpost of the Sumatran Srivijaya empire and originally bore the Javanese name Temasek ('sea town'). Temasek rapidly became a significant trading settlement, but declined in the late 14th century. There are few remnants of old Temasek in Singapore, but archaeologists in Singapore have uncovered artifacts of that and other settlements. Between the 16th and early 19th centuries, Singapore island was part of the Sultanate of Johor. During the Malay-Portugal wars in 1613, the settlement was set ablaze by Portuguese troops. The Portuguese subsequently held control in that century and the Dutch in the 17th, but throughout most of this time the island's population consisted mainly of fishermen.

On 29 January 1819, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles landed on the main island. Sighting its potential, Raffles signed a treaty with Sultan Hussein Shah on behalf of the British East India Company to develop Singapore as a trading post and settlement, marking the start of the island's modern era. Raffles's deputy, William Farquhar, oversaw a period of growth and ethnic migration. The British India office governed the island from 1858, but Singapore was made a British crown colony in 1867, answerable directly to the Crown. By 1869 the island boasted a sizeable community of 100,000."

Hello Richard,
very impressive night photo!
Good sharp details and fantastic colors!
Greetings,

Hi Richard

My you are blessed with a beautful place to photograoph. Im no expert in night photograohy have never tried it...yet lol. This is in my inexperienced opinion really well shot. The colours and sharpness are good. The lighting is also excellent, just one thing I am not too sure on is the balance of the whole image in the frame, something doesnt quite sit right. Maybe its too close and a shot from further back would have ended the reflections in the water as you have the whole of the top of the buildings in shot. I really love the image and I hope your not offended as I like to speak as I find I just feel the balance of the view is not all there.

Oh lord now Ive done it lol

TFS kind regards Helen

Great golden reflections. TFS. K2

I like this Richard, but are you shooting from the ground UP? IT's almost as if you are at a low profile and looking skyward! Is this your fisheye lens? The exposure is fine, could use a little more "star" effect in the lights....you can do a longer exposure, higher f stop for that...it really makes the details come out! Good first attempt!

Hello richard,
Excellent work,wonderful lighting,kolours and reflection.Good job.
Greetings.
Eva

I'm not an expert in night time photography, all I can do is pass on what I've observed.

In terms of composition, this is good: nice rule-of-thirds placement of the waterline, creating a nice balance between skyline and reflection.

In terms of POV - well, if you're shooting from anywhere except directly opposite your subject, you're going to get that perspective slant. I suspect professional doing the same shot would shift heaven and earth to get a straight-on perspective so that the waterline was properly horizontal.

I'm not sure also but I think an even smaller aperture - f16 - f22 - with an even longer exposure would give you a more balanced and brightly-lit nightttime shot, since the contrast between light and dark here is quite stark.

These are all just my thoughts, I haven't tried any of this myself so I can't claim any expertise - and besides which, this is a good shot. It caught my eye on the page right away and I like it very much!

Hi Richard. I like this one of a very famous scene in Singapore. The lights and colours are fine and the cropping well done. The notes on the history of this great city are good to readl. I am there later this week heading back from China. TFS. Murray.

Superb night panorama !

v
ps.You're in the water ?
pps.The fisheye version doesn't work for me

Richard,
Very nice night shot here.
I really appreciate a great night shot like this.
The exposure and colors are beautiful.
I am fine with everything except the composition.
I would have cropped a bit more off of the right side, probably losing the first arch of the bridge span but it wouldn't have left it as unbalanced as it is. I think the f/8 was appropriate and I might have bumped it up to a 200 ISO, although 100 did quite well here. 8 seconds did better than you'd expect too, did you shoot any 4-6 second shots?
It might sound like I'm being critical but I think you've actually done very well.
Scott

this one is amazing...i love the lights in the water...i'll try to do something like this during christmas time here...
