[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Taken during the same fight as this shot.

My aim here is to produce a gritty, perhaps old-style, boxing shot that perhaps can convey the emotion and drama of a fight.

I do not believe that boxing shots have to be bright and technicolour with all grain/noise removed and perfectly sharp. I think that sometimes, as long as you compose well and "catch the moment", technicals flaws can be overlooked to a degree.

Maybe others disagree, maybe this is a bad shot. Happy to hear diverse opinions!

Please check my boxing theme for other fight shots.

Shot in RAW, ISO 1250, jpegged, brightness reduced, contrast increased, resized, sharpened.

The timing is perfect in this shot. I agree with your note that not all has to be perfect but the timing does. Action shots like this are typically taken in difficult circumstances. The exposure is good and the subjects are sharp. Great action shot.

Hi Richard, Another good image in your boxing series. I like the B&W effect you present so well. The fast take shows the slit second of pain on the guy on the right. Excellent work. TFS. Murray.

Excellent choice of B&W for this great action shot!
excellent! LuDivine

I think John nailed it when he said the timing has to be perfect even if the rest of the shot isn't.

Yes, there's visible grain, and some motion-blur, but there's no denying you captured a bone-crunching moment and that's what it's all about!

Good work once again!

Hi Richard
Nice image but Volate....??????
Bad message....
We need love.....

Oh yeah, show TEX how to shoot a fight! Really nice Richard! Excellent action shot, the expressions are priceless! BW Works good here, but color could too!

You said "I think that sometimes, as long as you compose well and "catch the moment", technicals flaws can be overlooked to a degree." I totally AGREE!! Although processing CAN be used to clean up and I think it should be used if at all possible. Grainy, unsharp muddled photos are just brutal to even look at! Really nice shot Richard!

???we need love??..in BOXING???

Good atmospheric capture, well timed and presented. I agree, technical perfection is not always necessary (or even desirable). At least, that's my excuse ;-)
Cheers, John.

Richard your goal of a "old time boxing shot" is achieved here and is composed. Facial expressions wonderfully captured - looks like the second half of the one two punch is going to cause some damage.

Hi Big Fellah...
I'm lagging behind, sorry. This is a perfect boxing shot (OK, Tex has some better ones, but you are approaching :-) No kidding my friend, those expressions are priceless. An outstanding action sports picture.

Nice concept for action shot - very well framed and that expression on his face!!!! - GOOD WORK!
Tom:)

Rich,
You got the emotion, you got the drama and function follows form. :)
I enjoy the emotion on this guys face (on the right) I also enjoy the grain here. Gritty and grainy and B&W is the way boxing ought to be! Blurry and unlit? Nah, I don't think so.
I think you captured the essence of the match. I don't know what the "bad message" was about...Braca ("John -Love is all we need Lennon?") must have been mumbling under their breath. At any rate, this one's a keeper and surely must be a challenge to Tex, ding ding....round 1 and Kilted comes out swingin'.....Shall I call you Starr or will it take more than 10 seconds? :)
nice post and
