Just messing about with DOF and partial saturation, trying to learn photoshop a little.

The kids were given a bag of "Freddo" chocolates for Christmas by a neighbour, tonight we opened the bag and Wee Jess got all excited, ran around showing us what she had been given.

"Cadbury's Freddo Frog was invented in 1930 by Harry Melbourne, an 18 year old moulder, employed by MacRobertson's Chocolates. Freddo Frog is Australia’s most popular children’s chocolate, and is also sold in New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Freddo Frogs became part of the Cadbury product range in 1967, when MacRobertson's were sold to Cadbury. In Australia, Freddo Frogs are manufactured in Ringwood, Victoria and Hobart. Since the success of Freddo, an alternate chocolate named Caramello Koala, also made by Cadbury, has been created."

{wikipedia}

I'm not a big fan of giving the kids much chocolate. I find these odd ones - on the face of it, you have Freddo - all smiles and sugary sweetness. But in reality frogs can be slimy and sometimes very poisonous. And, although sweet and sugary on the surface, Freddo is pretty unhealthy and you wouldn't leave your kids alone with a bag of Freddos.

Shot in RAW, partially desaturated, jpegged, resized, sharpened.

Good morning Richard

Excellent PP work here the desat works very well, the DOF is spot on as the choccy bar is razor sharp and little Jess's hand is soft focus which is extreemly effective. The only thing I felt missing here is a complete connection between Jess and the choccy. As her hand is not in focus then maybe the rest of her arm in the shot would maybe have worked well. As ever this is just personal opinion and im not saying your wrong. Hope that all made sense.

Kind regards Helen

Hy Richard!
Very nice picture...Great PP work
Kind regards...

Stefan!!!!

Hi Richard,

I like this even though she is not the main focus you can see the excitement on her face. Good use of PP for this subject too.

Cheers
Tom

P.S I off to buy myself a Freddo now!

Great Job of your messing around Richard. This is quite effective. Perfect light and detail on the chocolate. I love the little one's demeanor in the background. I am sure this would make a great ad for the product.Super use of DOF. Love the note.
Regards
Wanda

Richard,
I bought some of these candies just the other day. They are not always what they appear to be. They are white chocolate which isn't normal to me. It's not what they advertised on the outside package. It's probably a self-portrait!
It must have been mislabeled. "Fraudulently" sort to speak.
They make your teeth rot and if a pack of dogs ate them they would only just be able to gum you! I think the 2.8 was perfect, it left a great image of wee Jess and the selective color was a great choice. I am not 100% positive I can see the exact focus point though. We know what's going on, wee Jess holding out Freddo for the world to see...she's so excited she's about to eat her own hand!
God bless her....great photo.
A great lesson here on DOF.
Nicely done,
Scott

Is this WEE JESS?? She is getting bigger Richard! Soon, you will be handing over the keys to your car! Very nice color just on the candy! The DOF is really nice, yet I can still tell who it is! Nice!
B-)
linda

this reminds me of my "sony ericsson" photo richard :P

good depth
excellent sharpness on the forground object
the selective desaturation works well for this :)

Hi Rich,

Next time you feed Jess your self OK? The poor kid surviving on neighbour cookies! Anyway your experiment is a success, great partial desaturation, superb DOF (the blurred Jess is excellent) and the razor sharp coloured cookie is perfect. An attractive idea my friend, very inspiring.

OK now go back to Jess and give her a decent meal of Haggis and a glass of Indian Pale Ale.

Frauddie cookies! Phuw...how do you dare, you shouldn't spoil your wee kids!

Hans

WODERFUL WORK RICHARD.....
It's very funny to see this chid in background...who is very proud of her "jewel".
The powerful of the desaturation is well used here...
Bravo!!!!
Claude

Hi Richard,
Nice experiment, The DOF is great and you seem to have cracked the partial desaturation well, I can't work out if Jess is trying to say here have this I don't like it or put the camera down and open this for me, well done
Regards Andy

Very effective use of the selective-saturation technique here Richard. Did you use layering/ layer mask to achieve this?

Funny, I'd always assumed Freddos were a New Zealand confectionery, for no reason other than it just seems so unlikely to package chocolate in the shape of a frog.

Nice use of the shallow DOF and an excellent touch that she's sucking her fingers in the background - barely discernable, but still a suggestion that she's impatiently waiting for the shot to be taken so she can tear that little packet open ...

Rew

Hi Richard !

Speaking of technique (shot and PP, too) this is sure great but I really don't know what to say about the message of this work ...

have a great weekend,
v

I'm afraid that I'm not seeing it your way ... I see more something like "can I have one more of these, please ?!"

Hey Richard,

Your photo is very well done. I just can't believe you were will to compromise the health of a child so you could play with DOF and Photoshop. What is the world coming to? ;-)

Randy

Well done my friend - this experiment gets a 10 in my book - DOF adds to the desaturation effect - nice focus on the goodies.

hi richard;
very cute pp work.bright idea ..tfs.

Hi Richard, Good result of this experiment. The coloured chocolate and the B&W backgrounds makes this very effective indeed. Perfect clarity on the subjct. TFS. Murray.
PS In Sing during next few days.

Cute image, the little girl blured a bit and the coloured subject.

Well done! Yan :)

Hi Richard,
Interesting idea! I like the PP work, the vivid colours really work against the B&W background. I always like shots which turn out well from unpromising beginnings, most people would never have seen the potential for a picture here.
Cheers, John.

Hello Richard,
I like your PP work here as the DOF... I have not seen this name but we do get Cadbury EGGS.. Yikes those things are nasty well to adults not kids... lol

Tricia

Blurry, grainy...not very original now is it?

Beautiful.
Love the way you played with the DOF on the background here. The selection of the PP,d parts where well made.
Excellent PP work
