Taken in the same bar where I snapped a couple of pics of
Ly
.

Second trip there to take photos, first time was a bit rushed as we hadn't planned on going to the pool place. This time I thought a little in advance and wanted a shot along these lines.

Focus on the ball, player in the background, high ISO to get some noise, no flash etc etc. The tilt somehow seemed natural when taking the snap.

A bit experimental, I like the low light, I like the b/w. Not sure it will win any TL popularity prizes, but this low-light/high ISO thing kinda appeals to me just now.

ISO 1600, f2.8, 1/60

Jpegged, converted to b/w, resized, sharpened.

No noise reduction

Very good. Just an idea. what if crop it tighter ? To reduce the empty space on the left

Hi Richard,
I agree with you for not doing the noise reduction. It works with this kind of mood. Sometime my graphic designer friend purposely added grain to an image in his artwork and it works, especially on a monotone design/image.

Very nice dof and pov. Very nice sharpness on the focused point and the tilt is also looks interesting.

Thank you for sharing,
Ramdan.

Hello nice pov and composition.

Hello Richard.
I like the light reflecting in the balls and very well done with the sharpness on them.
Noise adds some mood to the photo.
I am not sure about the player. IMO his face looks a bit unnatural, especially the black area. Looks like he has a beard or something.
Overall a good photo worth to show on TL.
Thanks
Wojciech

Hi Bravehart :-)
Great DOF (again) but the angle makes me feel vertigo. Nevertheless a daring image and I like this kind of experiments. You did well with the ISO 1600, f/2.8 and 1/60 shutter speed. The grain makes it even a bit nysterious. A fine posting my friend!
Hans

Well this is the second time I've critiqued this shot ... wish I knew what happened to my original critique (or what I wrote.)

I think I said that it's a classic - and that I like it! The focus on the balls, the tilt of the table, the atmospheric lighting and the intense poise of the player in the background all work to make this a very artistic and noir kind of shot.

Composition and placement all fit the "guideline of thirds." :)

Great work!

Nice POV and DOF
B&W works well
not sure I like the tilt would have to see level version to compare

Hi Richard,

you mentioned it as an experiment, but the result says it is a professional work! it's just perfect & an admirable shot! great sharpness & the tilt adds to the dramatic pov. well done!

thanks so much for sharing.

I didn't know you were going to post this today! Great stuff -- my favourite too.
There is a sense of imminent danger because of the PoV - as if we are about to be smacked hard by that cue ball
Very fine work, especially for those conditions

richard noting the ISO setting of 1600 this is well done and certainly achieved a interesting shot.
Your POV and focal point on the balls give it an impression of defeying gravity.
Like the B&W somehow just goes with a pool hall shot. (maybe a look smoky haze as well lol)

Hi Richard, Ideal for TL where creativity is the key. The balls on the slope make this very dynamic. Good contruct. TFS. Murray.

Nice angle here.
Good choice of tones and some grain.

I like this picture, I like the DOF and the black and white. I also like the contrast of the white and black balls, very nice. TFS.

HI Rich
I like very much your choice of focusing on the balls instead that on the guy. The tilted table makes the picture more "real" and doesn't bother at all here.
Good choice of having some noise.

It is really a great result

Roberto

PS: maybe you won't win any TL prize but i'll put it in my favorite!
