A portrait of Ly, taken on the same evening as this shot in the pool hall.

Ly had never posed for this type of portrait shot before and her English isn't too great (but better than my Vietnamese!), so I had to recruit her boyfriend to sit and demonstrate what I was after. It was quite fun and I think some shots came out OK.

Ly has not got copies of all the shots and seemed pretty pleased with them, so I guess that's what matters most...if she's happy, I might get another chance :-)

What was I trying to achieve here? I dunno - saw the location, thought it might look good in b/w. I think she looks pretty, looks thoughtful and isn;t looking at the camera! Top right of the image the base of the railings is in the shot. I do have others without that section, but I think it beaks up the horizontals a bit.

ISO 400, f2.8, 1/250. Shot at ISO 400 to get a faster shutter speed as it was starting to get dark.

Shot in RAW, slight crop, jpegged, resized, sharpened.

n.b. - great tip from Silke...hit F11 when looking at the photo :-)

Hey Richard:)
This is impressive portrait and she look like so happy because somebody there is just arrived, that she was waiting for...
BW works great and stairs are excellent element on this photo that makes so nice BG for Ly and even for contrast that is perfect.
Thanks - Tom

Another good one! Clear, crisp, with good details, perfect POV and focal distance (no distortion that I can see) and great placement of subject. Black and white does work well with the horizontal element of the steps. And metering is perfect, even with her white blouse.
Great shot!
Rew

Hey there! Thanks for the credit -- I cannot remember who first taught me the Fll trick back when I worked only a little laptop :D
I love the composition of this one. It looks casual -- which is fabulous! It doesn't look posed, but fresh & easy.
Pretty model, nicely captured.
You're finding you niche with portrait work -- something I haven't mastered at all just yet.

Hi Richard, I have become a fan of your oriental portraits. This is a good one. The horizontal lines being th esteps make it unusual and of course the pretty model is ideal. Good work. TFS. Murray.
