I'll start this with the EXIF data, for a change - as it impresses me what the equipment can do in these conditions...

ISO 1600, 1/25, f2.8 focal length 100mm. No noise reduction applied. Handheld. Shot in ambient light, no flash.

This is my second posting of a snap of Alex.

Alex is 20, 1/2 Nigerian and 1/2 Filipina - a friend of a work colleague and she is in town for a few days looking for work in the hospitality industry. She's hoping for employment in the new Casino/Integrated resort complex when it opens in Singapore in a couple of years. Any prospective employers out there?? :-)

This was a casual snap while we were sitting having a drink in Clarke Quay.

Shot in RAW, some brightness/contrast adjustment, cropped, jpegged, levels adjusted in CS2, resized, sharpened.

Critiques [Translate]

I like this better than the previous.

The composition is good. There is a subtle diagonal line from her hair framing her face.
I like the white shoulder and ear ring too. I think it balances the shot nicely.

The contrast is better here than in the previous too. There is a better range from black to white.

I agree that the result is super considering the high ISO and the fact that it's handheld at 1/25s but I do think there is too much noise.

Great shot.

Cheers,
Jens

Hi Richard,

This thumbnail reached out and grabbed hold! I really think this is a very nice portrait. I saw the one posted yesterday, but I prefer this one for the simple reason of her complexion. I also like how you have filled the frame with her beautiful face. I'm trying to understand and compare the differences of the two photos....

thanks for sharing Alex's 2nd post! Lisa

Nice

Ahhhhhhh I like this one Richard, The ISO is amazing for it's lack of grain. Skin tones spot on. She doesn't look like she minds this one. Love the natural light.

Dan

Richard,
I really like these portraits in B&W. I like how you have filled the entire frame with her face. She is a beuatiful model to work with. Great focus on her eyes, they really draw me in. I also like the lighting in this shot as well. Another great portrait Richard.
Regards,
Kevin

Hello, Kilted Arab,
you are a strong proponent of honest critiques, yes? If I had hired a photographer to do these portraits, he'd have had to do them again. This one is somewhat better than the first, but not enough to have made me buy them. Getting so close and with such lighting might have worked well for a baby, but her complexion is too dry and too rough for such close work. Those lines by her mouth are far too deep and too visible. Her makeup looks caked and the lines show more than it would seem they should for a woman her age. Particularly so in the first one. One eye looks good in this shot, the other is a bit dull and the whole of the photo seems flat. I hope she was more impressed than I am. Thanks,
Shelly

Hi Richard, You are meeting some very eotic females at Clarke Quay these days. And the result of those aquaintances we can also enjoy through your portraits. I like the close crop and the notes. Keep up these interesting postings. TFS. Murray.
PS I'm doing some projects in China at present, but will be passing thru Singapore some time. M.

Hi Rchard,
Lovely model and good tonal range. Overall contrast is also good. Well captured and composed. Tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Nicely done! Terrific shot.

What can I say, I think it has all the finesse of a professionally taken shot and I mean it.

I've realised that, enthusiastic amateurs as we are on TL, we're all far too obsessed with finding flaws and not quite so good at stepping back and enjoying the success of a shot.

So - the obligatory flaw-finding - actually for me the only drawback would be the fact that her leading eye is sharp and her further eye is a little soft. That's it, and maybe just a fraction more space on the left, but not important.

You know me, I like the skin textures as they are - honest and real and actually how human beings look. I also love the catchlights in her eyes. She has fascinating features and a very unique beauty.

Great job. :)

Hi Richard,
Well considering the camera settings this is an excellent shot and hand held, this must have been before the beer LOL, I really like the tight crop and think this is a better shot than the other, I know it has been said already but the left eye being sharp and the right eye not so is the only downfall here, I guess it's due to the f2.8 you used.
Well done
Regards Andy

Ok richard, what's there to say..
The girl is absolutely stunning, but that's not your falt is it ? :)

What I like is that you made this on 1600 ISO ! So you must be one of thise freaks like me who don't want to work with artificial light !
I think it's a great challenge to work only with ambi light
You did very well !

TFS

Nice sensor in the 5D, comparing it to a couple of my ISO 1600 shots with the Rebel anyway.
Good steady hand at 100mm and 1/25 sec. :0)
I think the photo itself is quite nice, I've read some of the critiques and I'm lucky, I don't know enough about technical portraiture to say much of anything, but I don't mind the look of this at all. I like natural lighting a lot and I like the presentation of her face here.
Good job,
TFS,
Wilt

Hi Richard,

Super shot for hand held, the noise in the shadows actually ads to the monochrome feel just like good old grain.

Douglas

Hi Richard
Thanks for your comments on my shot today but one thing struck me looking at your gallery, I'm confronted by angry farmers getting my shots and your confronted by Alexis -hmmm !
It's a lovely delicate shot, the B+W really suits her and the tight composition shows her beautiful features, as for the very slight noise I think it all adds to the shot
Have a good one
Pez

hello Richard
nice portrait
i like the tight frame on to the model.
Black and white is a good choice for this kind of shot because the model in a thoughtful mood. expressive eyes.

regards
Manuj Mehta

Once again a very beautiful portrait! A more mysterious expression this time. I'm undecided as to which I like the most. Thanks and I hope your weekend is going well.

Best regards,

Hi Richard, fascinating B&W pèortrait with splendid model, intense expression, very well done, ciao Silvio

Now this is her sexy look! or maybe it's a "you've got to be kidding look!" HAHA! I love these shots, the only way to make the perfect is to take a million of them! SO nice that she is so young that close ups are nice! When you get as old as I am, you need Botox! I like how she is diagonal in the frame!
HAHA!
B-)
Linda

Like others Richard I prefer this over the first one. Good eye contact and well composed. I must ask the question though, why such high ISO?
David

The exif data is quite impressive but don`t forget: you are using the 5D (one of the lowest noise cameras on the market) and the70-200 lens, with the image stabilizer. It turns out that you get what you pay for, right?
Also, at this size, I don`t expect to see any noise in a photo, even at ISO1600, using a 5D.
More than the technical data I appreciate the expressivity of the photo and the look in the model`s eyes.
I don`t think that finding a job will be a problem for her:)
Nice job,
Nelu
