Taken less than 4 hours ago at the bird park here in Singapore, this is my eldest daughter, Hannah.

This was about to become "the best day of her life" as she got to hold an owl, fed some lorikeets and had strawberry ice cream covered in rainbow sprinkles :-)

f2.8, 1/320, focal length 200mm, ISO 200

white balance was set at "daylight"

shot in RAW but no pp work applied other than jpegging, resizing and sharpening. So posted as taken. No make-up, no artificial lighting, no pp work - an "honest" snapshot, if you like.

You'll be pleased with this one! Flattering light, good camera settings (and a good camera, good lens etc.) and as you say, a very nice pure shot - I love it.

Good use of the

Good morning Richard,
You focused here very well on the eyes of Hannah, they are pin sharp. Such a low f-stop as f/2.8 is always a bit tricky but it worked well here, an excellent DOF. Regarding the skin, it looks a bit pale to me, or maybe I should say the colour tone is a bit dull. Or is that her Scottish skin? Anyway I like this adorable portrait of your daughter.
Hans

N.B. Ignore Rew's remark about the camera.

A beautiful shot - fantastic sharpness on her eyes.. She'll be trouble when she hits her teens ;) (I've 2 stepdaughters that started off cute and grew up!!!!) Nice crop and good use of the wide aperture.
As Hans points out the colours look a little flat, maybe more contrast would work well here... I find that that can be a problem with RAW files, film would work very 'honestly' LOL.

Cheers
DAvid

Hi Richard,

What a great shot! Your "snapshot" would make most portrait photographers jealous. Your shallow DOF got you a bit with her hair on the left, but it certainly doesn't detract from the photo. You captured her beautiful, innocent expression very well. The colours are very natural. I don't think that I would have wanted to touch anything more on the shot either. Terrific work! TFS.

Regards,
John

She is a cute and very beautiful. Excellent portrait image.

Congratulations Richard.....
With your lovely and cute young daughter.
Ànd with this beautiful portrait!
Greetings to Singapore....

TFS and regards from Netherlands,
Adri

I'm happy to see this Richard. Oh to be a kid again ... they seem to have "the best days of their lives" at least once a week!
Great shot of your beautiful Hannah - fantastic eye contact (amazing eyes!!!), lovely soft expression, nice framing with hair and hat. Great job Richard - this is a beauty!

Hi Richard,

Her expression is so adorable. She reminds me of a china doll that one would see in a catalogue. Such a sweet expression. I also like the background choice.

I do think that I would try perhaps a bit of contrast to perhaps boost the details, colors just a bit. It almost has an old fashioned feel with the softness of the tones, etc...

Sounds like you had a wonderful day! Lisa

hi richard,
a shot to be proud of.
i'm going to need some tips from you on how to take this kind of shot.
nicely framed and good use of the hat.

don't listen to hans about 'her scottish skin'. he's only jealous because his skin is like leather. ;-)

well done baldy,
Brian

When you take shots of your girls, you finally include the ingredients missing in most of your other images...a relationship and instinct for the subject. You are able to get close enough, both literally and figuratively, to capture the real reason to look and see more profoundly. As others have mentioned, however, the muted tones flatten and dull this image a bit much...the RAW shot does not process color/contrast for you...so some of Hannah's natural glow and vitality is lost here. Nevertheless, the expression on her face and the look in her eyes are winners. You're a lucky dad.

ciao Richard..
i know this girl.. hannah banana is always gorgeous and tender!
great portrait.. my compliments
ciao Marco

i love it :) i was actually begining to miss your girls' photos :) i love the bokeh the most here. but overall, its hannah's beauty and cuteness that dominates the shot. i would prefer slightly more contrast, just a tad bit more and thats it.

great post. love it.

ps.A bit more contrast ?

Hi Richard,
I really like this portrait, it's well set, nice angle and what a gorgeous child. But on the technical aspect, the first thing that strike me is the color balance, which is a bit cold. Bluish cast almost give the illusion of haze, and the bright top hat, contribuated to the lack of contrast on the face part. So I've done a workshop to let you see, my point of view...hope you'll like.
