Two Korean kids playing their version of hopscotch, at this famous temple in central South Korea. These 'jangseung' or guardian totem poles are the tallest I've ever seen. The text also appears to be Chinese, rather than Korean. There's a fountain in the distance.

I've used a 28mm lens, so there is some lens barrel distortion. This pattern was used / | \ so that the centre line is reasonably level.

"A 'jangseung' or village guardian is a Korean totem pole usually made of wood. Jangseungs were traditionally placed at the edges of villages to mark for village boundaries and frighten away demons. They were also worshipped as village tutelary deities.

In the southern regions of Jeolla, Chungcheong, and Gyeongsang, jangseungs are also referred to as beopsu or beoksu, a variation of boksa (복사/卜師), meaning a male shaman.

In the Jeolla region, jangseungs are often made of stone bearing some resemblance to the dolhareubangs of Jeju Island."

Hello Chris,

The slight distortion gives a pleasing effect to this fine, symetrical composition as it emphasises the central route throught the shot.
The focus is sharp, catching the fine details of the patterns and the colours.
The small children add an infectious, happy interest to quite a formal setting.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

another nice capture Chris good pov and wonderfull colours leaving the children in gives us a a good idea of the size of the decorative poles in the forground tfs

Bom dia Chris,
To me the most important here is the children softening and brokening the serious and ritual graphism.
It's a very special post.
Congratulations,
Raimundo

Ciao Chris

Before opening the thumbnail, I wondered if these were totem poles in BC!
Really nice symmetrical shot, colors are great as always. The two kids playing add a good interesting element to the shot.
Have a good week Chris.

Very petty Chris. The intense blue sky, the wonderful graphism, and the two playing kids indeed are the featured elements that make the scene for me. Regards,
Danilo
