This is the boat I talked about in my last posting.
This day was the culmination of the Buddhist Sacrificial Ceremony. This takes place every 12 years. After a month long series of parades and celebrations, the boat was hauled to the beach and the sails were erected.
After that, the boat was filled with bundles of "god money" that people purchased for the burnt offering. Even after the boat was full, bundles were placed around the boat. In this picture, the fire has just started. I took video for the rest of the burning.
People continued to toss bundles of money onto the boat. It took several hours to burn since the fire was started on the downwind part.
All during the day, there was non-stop drum beating and traditional music. There were probably several thousand people surrounding the boat. |
