The Bridge on the River Kwai is an infamous world war 2 location. Over 100,000 Asian labourers & about 16,000 allied soldiers died here under the Japanese imperial army, including British, Dutch & Australian troops. The Japanese armys' idea was to push through a railroad to Rangoon (Yangon) for the assault on Myanmar & India. (Both were then British colonies). More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_on_the_River_Kwai

The first 2 'curved' spans (not visible here), are part of the original bridge, built in 1942. The box girder, or rectangular spans in the distance, were added much later, after the war, to replace bombed out sections of the bridge. (British war planes repeatedly bombed the bridge during the war).

Yup, i remember the movie with the same title.
I like your photo too. People look so small on this bridge. It reminds me that we are not the most important in whole world.

this photo brings us back to a historical memory lane. very sharp and detailed photo considering that it was a scanned pic if it was taken in 1990. thanks for sharing, Chris!

Nice documentary kind of shot, Chris. Scan work is impeccable, you kept (almost) everything nice under control; I just see some strange lines in the sky through the left side of the front span.
Did you boost the saturation ?

I just think the picture is tilted counterclockwise, IMO you should have corrected it.
Anyway, TFS.

Neat shot and nice note to explain. Isn't there a movie by that title? If not, it sounds like it would make a good movie name. Great shot and thanks for sharing.

Very well done Chris
The history behind the bridge is great
I remember watching the movie as a kid and loving it, I posted the photo to workshop and cropped a bit off the left hand side hope you like it.
Thanks for sharin

nicely composed photo, good details on the bridge.
the people on the bridge adds life to the otherwise "death railroad" as it is known in chinese

I like the perspective of this shot, the bridge going off into the distance and inviting the eye to look into the frame. It is sad to think of all the people who died here working on the railroad. I remember seeing the movie many years ago. Good composition Chris.

Hi Cris, the story of this bridge has always fascinated me and I am delighted to see a photo of it here. Lots of history here and your composition is excellent. TFS....:O)

Well done!
But I couldn't resist a ws; hope you don't mind. I lighten up a but the coloours.

take cre, Stef

I went there also. It is a sad place, so much of SE was sad. War is so nasty, you must hate an enemy to kill them....... But all are people, and most just want to live their lives in peace.

Hi Chris, great picture! Great title (even if it from the film)! I like your composition. Thanks for your note.
Nino

Hi Chris...this brings back a lot of memories for me. I checked out your gallery and I'm lucky to have been to many of the same places as you. Spent a month there a short while ago. Awesome place to visit.

Joe

I appreciated the movie
Nice to remember for all who died for our liberty. God bless them.

Hi Chris, I do have this movie in my collection. What a surprise. Nice perspective. :) Vandana

Hi Chris. Most interesting photograph enhanced with your detailed note on this famous place. Very good clarity and colours. TFS. Murray.

Hi Chris! Lovely POV of this very famous but tragedy-stricken bridge. I saw the sad story of this railway in NatGeo a few days ago. Very good details and colors with a little overexposure and a little tilt to the left but I like the perspective very much.
TFS,
Freddie :)
