Snapped earlier this evening at some "traditional" Thai show - quite how traditional it was, i'm not sure - but it kept myself and lots of other tourists entertained :-) Including my kids, which was a good thing!

"While not a difficult skill to learn initially, it is the most dangerous of all the fire arts, and not just due to the obvious risk of serious burns. To increase safety, fire breathers must avoid highly explosive fuels such as alcohol, spirit-based fuels, and most petrochemicals, instead using safer combustibles with a high flash point (>50 °C) and relatively low burn temperature. Due to its relatively safe (~90 °C) flash point, paraffin or highly purified lamp oil, is the preferred fuel for fire breathing.

Wind direction is extremely important when fire breathing. To determine the wind direction artists usually watch the flame on their torch. If the torch's flame is not being blown in any specific direction then it is safe to breathe. If a torch's flame is consistently blowing in a specific direction it is unsafe to breathe in that direction, or it's opposite. Wind reversal can cause the flame to burn the breather.

Breathers create a fine mist by spitting with an aperture similar to that needed for playing a trumpet. The wider a breather's mouth is the larger the droplets will be and the less they will travel causing the fire to be that much closer to the breather's face.

Breathers will usually carry a cloth to wipe their mouth between breathes to remove the fuel from their skin. Breathers with facial hair must be especially careful that the fuel does not collect in the hair where it could catch fire and would burn for an extended period because hair acts like a wick.

Many breathers wear goggles to protect their vision in high wind, group breathing or downwards breathing scenarios."

Hello Richard

Love this shot.. great contrast not only in the colour but also in the fire and water elements. Razor sharpe and nice lighting. Fantastic capture.

TFS regards Helen

Hello Richard. Nice shot and excellent notes. I would question the "traditional" myself but a great photo opportunity exploited to it's fullest. Thanks for sharing.

Regards Phil.

Hi Richard, this is just great, very nice, well done

Beautiful image . . . very scary practice! What if they breathe the fire inward!

thanks,

Richard in San Francisco

Good greeve, heavy stuff he's swallowed ;-)
Stunning capture of this "fire spitter' The fire is excellent captured, the white/yellow/orang/red tones are superb my friend. The 1/800 shutter speeds is very well chosen so it "freezes" the fire :-)
Outstanding posting my friend.
TFS

Richard,
INCREDIBLE! That flame to the left looks like a clenched fist! Superb detail here. Perfect composition and VERY good notes. You nailed the shutter speed perfectly! I'd give it a larger smile if I could. A+ image my friend,

Good capture of this performer. Very good control of focus and DOF, the flame is gorgeous against the blurred gray background.

Hi there!
WOW! What perfect timing!
I love the colours, and the details in the fireball are amazing!
Also, your framing and POV are perfect.
Well done on a great shot!

Great action shot, Richard! Beautiful, wild flames with their soft light reflecting on the man's body. Phantastic detail, razor-sharp. Good POV showing the man's posture. Well captured. TFS, also for the note. - Cheers, Cordelia :)

Yikes, I used to do this when I had heartburn!! Amazing shot here Richard! I love the "stop-action" of the shot! Very nice exposure here, as the fire can be too bright sometimes! Love it!
Linda

WOWeeeeeee

Fantastic capture Richard, just perfect, love the glow on the mans body, making for lovely skin tones. I also like the sharpness and colour of the thing he is wearing, and the nice foreground ripples of the water.

I need to pinch this photo. he he..(just kiddin), as we have to find and take a photo of FIRE for an upcoming assingement for our photo club!..I should have been there!

Well Done
Dawn

Incredible photo Richard. What a great capture. Beyond freezing the action of the flames ("beyond the obvious"? - LOL!), I love the expression on the guy's face, the orange reflection on his skin, the fact that he's half in the water, the small ball of flame at the other end, and the perfectly blurred background. The blown highlights in the flame near his mouth only emphasize the terrific heat and potential danger to the man. Excellent!

- Bob

Wow :)
Lovely shot - so many good things to say...
Sharpness of the flame is beautiful - and the colours and patterns too...
The way the flame is lighting up the flame thrower is cool - as the light is low in the rest of the shot - very nice :)
Excellent composition and depth of field - very cool capture!

wow this is certainly breathtaking.

Hi Richard :o)
Awesome ! Fantastic shot ! Excellent timing ... everything is perfect ! Great sharpness and lovely colours. We can see drops around him, excellent !

Hi Richard
Another great shot, I really like the reflections of the fire on his skin, against the darkening evening this makes for good contrast. A striking shot, well captured.
Best wishes,
Philippa

Hi Richard,
What a marvelous photo. I really like the exposure and frozen action. The dark colors of the flame are very beautiful. The details are as sharp as my lawyer. Love the soft skintone and the shallow DOF. This is really a masterpiece.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Richard!
Fantastic picture made in the exactly right moment!
The only thing I don not like so much is,that the firs is a bit oversaturated. But well done!
Jonas

I dont even need to read other peoples comments to imagine the moutain of praise.
The oportunity makes the thief we say in Portugal, you've stolen a piece of life and wonder here. The postprocess work was just enough and added depth to the subject.
Great job!
