This elephant is one of the orphan elephants who are living on the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Indeed, an orphanage for elephants !

There are sad stories about trying to eleminate the elephants on Sri Lanka by the English people, many years ago. But oke, the vision about this turned around, and now they are trying to rescue as many elephants as is possible.

These elephants are living really close to people. How comes that no accidents happen ? Because the elephants are controlled with a stick !!

This stick is called a "henduwa", a long wooden staff with a pointed metal tip on one end shaped like the claw of a king eagle. By prodding elephants in various locations, the acupuncture points (!), trainers can actually encourage behavioural responses in these large animals. This ranges from becomming quiet to killing.

Hoi Joop,
Mooie scherpe plaat Joop, prima verhaal erbij.

Hi Joop
Very interesting reading material. I am learning so much since I joined Tk thanks to people like you who have so much culture to share.
Beautiful composition,of this majestic animal and trainer.
I hate to see chains on any animal but I guess they are necessary.
Great shot, and TFS

...I return... :)

Hallo Joop
Prachtige registratie van dat moment.

Hi Joop,
Very cute and powerfull animal but i dont like how it is catured with chaines,
I guess the henduwa is just for pointing direction not to harm the elephant,
Nicely framed,
Keep posting,
