You're right, very often candid portraits are the best - or at least ones where the subject is relaxed enough not to care that a photo is being taken!
I'm not sure if this works with the camera obscuring his face, but the light is good and the tilt you've given this shot is unique and interesting.

Very interesting portrait, that kid seems to be really looking for that special shot. I like the way he handles the camera...young pro...maybe a future Ansel Adams..)) Nice work.
I thought a tighter cropping would be appropriate here..so i post it on workshop..)) Hope you'll like.

I agree the non posed shot is really perfect.. I love his expression.. I'd love to see what he finally shot!
I have an 13 and 11 year old and I encourage them to take many photos. I am always amazed after a hike what they come up with... mostly because I missed it! lol .
