Hofburg Imperial Palace is a palace in Vienna, Austria, which has housed some of the most powerful people in Austrian history, including the Habsburg dynasty, rulers of the Austro-Hungarian empire. It currently serves as the official residence of the President of Austria. It was the Habsburg's principal winter residence, while Schönbrunn Palace was their preferred summer residence.

The Hofburg area has been the documented seat of government since 1279 for various empires and republics.

The Hofburg has been expanded over the centuries to include:
Hofburg Neue Burg section, seen from Heldenplatz. The statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy is also pictured.

* various residences (with the Amalienburg);
* the chapel (Hofkapelle or Burgkapelle);
* museums (the Naturhistorisches Museum & Kunsthistorisches Museum);
* the Imperial Library (Hofbibliothek now the Prunksaal);
* the treasury (Schatzkammer);
* the national theatre (Burgtheater);
* the riding school (Hofreitschule); and,
* the horse stables (the Stallburg and Hofstallungen).

The Hofburg faces the Heldenplatz ordered under the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph, as part of what was to become a Kaiserforum that was never completed.

Numerous architects have executed work at the Hofburg as it expanded, notably the Italian architect-engineer Filiberto Luchese (the Leopoldischiner Trakt), Lodovico Burnacini and Martino and Domenico Carlone, the Baroque architects Lukas von Hildebrandt and Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach (the Reichschancelry Wing and the Winter Riding School), Johann Fischer von Erlach (the library), and the architects of the grandiose Neue Burg built between 1881 and 1913.

The Hofburg Palace is so popular and famous that it was the main motif of one of the most famous silver collectors' coins: the 20 euro Renaissance commemorative coin.

The coin shows the "Swiss Gate" of the palace. This gate bears Ferdinand I's coat-of-arms and titles. It is flanked by two soldiers of the period as a reminder of the unsettled times which saw Vienna besieged by Turkish armies in 1529, as well as the struggles between Protestants and Catholics during the Reformation.

una buona nota storica ma questa foto non mi dice proprio nulla
la luce è pessima e il palazzo è tagliato male
mi dispiace

Hi Adrian,

A good wide-angle view of the palace. When I first looked at the photo, I thought there was a slight tilt to the right, but I now think it is only a bit of lens distortion on the left side of the picture. In either case, it can be corrected in pp software. Interesting architecture, TFS.

Best regards,
Werner

Hello Adrian,
The wide angle view of the palace along with the throng of tourists certainly remind me of the travel book on Vienna I was reading from years back (the trip never materialized). F/10 at midday resulted in a good exposure, there is good sharpness. best regards.

Hi Adrian

Good perspective control, with nice symmetry of the flags. Excellent sharpness & the people animate the scene. Smart choice of a wide angled, panoramic format. Tfs!

Bonsoir Adrian.
Un jour, il faudra aussi que j’aille visiter cette ville.
Mais en attendant, je me régale avec cette belle image que tu nous montres ici.
Bonne soirée.

Vienna ,an incredibly stately and grandiose city , so much history has gone into the making of this charming place, I wish the sky be more saturated to make that building pop some more either by use of a polariser on your lens or in PP , somehow it's levelled ,the building has nice lines and the panoramic format works well for this one as the long rectangular building invariably commands it ! The tourists in front of it testify to its popularity too , i know this one !

dear Adrian,
my first impression, this is like a "balancing toy"...
asymmetrical composition of symmetrical palace,
and people on left side, those are very interesting for my eyes, and very nice composition,
old palaces in Vienna were constructed symmetrically, but "symmetrical" itself is not beautiful, but an idea to beautifulness,
your this shot suggests that old situation...
thank you,
Akihisa

Merhaba Adrian,
