[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today was one of those days for people that love numbers and their alleged symbolism... hence the title. I just wanted to take a picture at a date and time with all highly curved numbers. Maybe because the older I get, the more curved I become ☺^☺.

Could have been a nice theme for Helen, but she had already posted one... Anyway, this one is freaky enough, don't you think? LOL.

As I'm commuting by train and need to wait a couple of minutes in the station of Antwerpen Centraal, I took the chance to take another auto-portrait. It had been a while, and I kind of had forgotten what a fuss it can be... With only about 7 minutes for the set-up I had no time to lose.

Tech talk

Set-up

Camera on a small tripod on the table on the other side. No room for my head, so I had to check the "general direction" of the lens. Mmm... Will need to upgrade to a camera with LiveView ☺^☺.

ISO to 400, it seems the National Railroad Company NMBS needs to save money on lighting. Using my external flash wasn't really an option with all the glass, and also because the little tripod looked very unstable - I really should have brought my full-size tripod.

Exposure compensation: + 2/3 stop to compensate for the large window.

Used the wireless remote control to take the shots.

Post-processing

Converted the raw colour version to b&w using Canon's Raw Image Task in Zoombrowser/EX. A bit less contrast, slight tweak of levels. Used Adobe's colour space instead of sRGB, as it definitely contains more levels of grey.

Saved as tiff and opened in PS. Downsized, sharpened and added signature. Then framed...

Hi Frank,

I was working at 80:08 but I wish I would have thought to take a photo of the clock or something. Living in the U.S., we don't use the 24 hour clock, so I can take one this evening... We get two chances!! LOL

Nice photo of you reading. I like how you are off to the side. The details of the station are nice too. Station name is front and center! Black and white is a nice effect for this.

Bonjour Frank,
Un travail minutieux pour un superbe auto-portrait! L'idée est géniale, et bien planifiée compte tenu du temps à ta disposition. Et malgré l'état précaire du "studio", ce superbe résultat est à la mesure de ton talent et de ta passion pour la photographie!
Le modèle a été très coopératif et le B&W bien nuancé allant dans une vaste gamme de gris. Excellente technique, merci de la partager.
Je me demande si le dessin dans la fenêtre n'aurait pas pu être "post-traité" pour lui donner l'appararence de 0 et de 8. On y aurait vu que du feu!

Hey Frank, hello to you.. great self photo, love the black and white.

How about this for the 8's... my father born on the 08.08 (august)..my brother born on 08.08..another brother born on the 8th, and myself born on the 8th Jan..so my mother had 3 children all born on the 8th. Seems a lucky number for some.

Love your name on the wall..seems to fit well into the photo.. but im wondering, was there anybody looking at you while you were doing all this.. ha ha..

Really interesting and well done; I'll bet it was tricky without "live view" to get it configured just right.
The image, however, and the composition, in spite of the difficulties, came out quite nicely including some spectacular DoF.
I like it a lot.

this looks like someone took the shot, except for the remote control that you're discretely manipulating (definitely confirms that yes, this is a 'self-shot) and discuss in the notes. very well done, must be very difficult to make. how many take did you do with this compo, anyway? mind you, this is awesome. you still got the repetitive arches outside well centered in the window. amazing!

A good result, for such a short prep time, in this superb b&w self portrait. Tfs!

Vind ik " toppie " Frank-joh ! :-)

Over het algemeen vind ik compo en belichting heel geslaagd.
Ook je B/W omzetting kan ik smaken : je hebt, IMO, een ruime range van grijswaarden. Dat maakt het rustgevend.
( het is een keuze, niet iedereen kan dit smaken )
Technisch vind ik dit een goeie prestatie !

Wat me het meeste stoort is je " Dingo "
Vervang dan voor mijn part " Antwerpen - centraal "
door " Dingo ".
Geen kat in het buitenland weet wat " Antwerpen - centraal " is, dus IMO kan dit best.

Heb je daar iets tussen duim-en-wijsvinger ?
Moet de kranten eens terug nalezen :
" bom alarm " ...

"Vergat" deze foto te beoordelen, dus dan maar nu. Maar wat te zeggen? Het is gewoon perfect, de compositie, de belichting, het idee, allemaal top. Uitvoering uitstedend en titel: uniek. Echt een fantastich zelfportret in een unieke omgeving,\. Indrukwekkende foto!

Wel frank... je ziet er beter uit dan ooit. Het fijnste aan de foto is dat Antwerpen Centraal erop staat ;)

Echt te gek voor woorden - hoe heb je het voor elkaar gekregen - 8.8.8 om 8.enz enz.
Een zelfportret, wat leuk om je eens te zien - ha, er is nog wel ruimte voor meer curves ^-^.
Het is een heel gedoe zo'n foto van jezelf en dan net doen of je verdiept bent in een boek (welk?) - super idee, fantastische uitvoering, ééntje om te bewaren.
Bij ons werd om 8 uur op 8.8.8 het bruidsboeket en de corsages bezorgd.

Dít is het soort prenten dat ik ook wel zou willen maken, Frank. Met andere woorden: dít vind ik nu eens goed, zie!
Mooie, verstilde sfeer die goed past bij de bezigheid "lezen". Je was zeker "De trein der traagheid" aan het doorworstelen? ;o)
Los van de 08.08.08-hype had deze ook gewoon "Antwerpen Centraal" kunnen heten.
De keuze voor zwartwit past goed bij de verstilling waarover ik het eerder had.
Om kort te zijn, jij hebt op 08.08.08 om 08.08.08 je tijd níet verspild ;o).
