I like. The composition here is well thought-out and nicely delivered, good use of negative space. Good sharpness, especially for the focal length/ shutter speed ratio - you did well!

The grain works fine in my opinion - and the fact that you didn't convert to b&w is refreshing, it would be the obvious thing to do to create an "artistic" photo, so I'm glad you didn't.

If anything, perhaps a little post processing to boost the blues and decrease the yellows, and a little deeper contrast, might have improved it; but it works fine for me as is.

Bonjour Erik,
Belle présentation de ce musicien de jazz et composition,, jolies couleurs et détails, pour ce qui est de la netteté il faut prendre une photo sur manual et mettre l'ouverture au maximum F-8 sur ta camera qui te donnera une belle profondeur de champ . a l'ouverture f-3.3 et au speed 1-30 seconde tu n'as que quelques centimètres de jeu, ce qui fait que ta camera a pointée le saxophone et le visage qui est éloigné donne une image un peu flue sur le visage du sujet..remarque qu'il y a l'éclairage aussi qu'il faut regarder et l'iso. Pour un photo prise sur le vif elle est superbe..
et a F-8 avec un leger éclairage il te faudra un trépier et dire au sexophoniste de ne pas bouger pendant la prise de photo et essayer de trouver le bon speed pour avoir une photo comme tu désires..

Hello Erik,
I have nothing to say about the image except that it caught my eye in the thumbnails due to the shading on his face. I know so little about portraiture, but that's one component of lighting that I thought I should look closer. I am portrait handicapped, but I'm working on that in my drawings and painting (which are worse than my photographs!).

I want to add your comment and Rew's to my list I'm collecting in the interest of learning more about portraiture.
I'm not sure, but I think I saw the Bernard Guyot Quartet performing at the old Bimhaus in Amsterdam. I haven't been to the new music center there, but I'm sure it cannot beat the charm that the other building had, although I understand the accoustics are better.
Oh well,

Hallo Erik,
Ik ben al drie keer terug gegaan naar deze foto en ook je note gelezen.
1.Je opname van deze saxofonist is prachtig.
De man gaat op in de muziek,de uitdrukking op zijn gezicht bevestigd dat.
2.De kleur van de sax is perfect.Het gezicht daarachter,een beetje in de schaduw,prima.
3.Het gaat hier om de expressie en niet alleen perfectie.De man vertelt iets aan het publiek.
Dus Erik,een pracht foto en hij gaat bij mijn favorieten.Bedankt en groetjes,

Noise zie ik bijna niet, Erik, dus dat zit wel snor. Om met 400 ISO en 1/30 toch zo'n scherpe foto te krijgen is een kwestie van geluk... Om het gezicht scherper te krijgen moet je prefocussen, de focus locken en dan hopen dat zijn gezicht niet teveel voor- of achteruit beweegt... wat bij een muzikant niet evident is. Voor mij is de scherpte goed genoeg, ook op z'n gezicht. Kleurtoon hoort bij een concert maar voor mij mocht er wat minder geel in.
Je compositie is perfect, het square formaat past heel goed bij het onderwerp... Heel goed vind ik ook de achtergrond - want er is er geen, en minder afleidend kan niet.

You captured his emotions Erik. This is not a poor light condition, as your ISO is only 400. You did a great job here, I like your style Bro.

"J’aurais pu nettoyer le grain dû à la valeur iso élévée, mais cela fait si « jazz », donc j’ai préféré ne pas y toucher." et puis qu'est-ce que tu perdrais en netteté...
les couleurs ne sont pas trop mauvaises en effet, rew a raison de dire que ça tend vers le jaune, mais n'est-ce pas l'éclairage qui fait ça ?
ayant un APN du même genre que le tiens le réglage est sûrement optimal, car c'est pas le top pour ce genre de conditions, on ne peut pas vraiment faire mieux, quoique pour la netteté, tu as peut être zoomé un peu et perdu en profondeur de champs...
pour ce qui est du recadrage, je trouve que c'est pas mal, mais là c'est une affaire de goûts, je verrai bien un plan encore plus serré... et en N&B (toujours affaire de goût), d'où un petit WS

Infeite vind ik dit een mooie foto.
Ergens spijtig want ik voel me echt in m'n " schrijf " vandaag.
Kleur of B/W ... denk dat ze hier hetzelfde verhaal vertellen.

Zulke foto's zou ik normaal in portrait nemen maar,
je bent ne slimmerik : met " vierkant " neem je me
de wind uit de zeilen ;-)

Indien je ze zou afdrukken zou ik letten op de noise.
Voor het web valt het amper op.
