Ann & I took some time for ourselves this weekend; we decided to go to Waterloo, to discover a part of our country's history : the Battle of Waterloo, fought on 18 June 1815.

Actually, at that time Belgium didn't even exist; we were part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (aka Lowlands). This memorial mound has been built on the spot where the Prince of Orange, one of Wellington's commanders, was wounded during the Battle... The mound is covered by a statue of a lion - which represents the Allied Nations - keeping the globe between his paw and keeping its eye on France. The mound is 41 metres high and you have to climb some 226 steps to enjoy the view.

Today, the landscape surrounding the mound is pretty much unchanged, even after some 200 years. Even the farmhouses that played an important part in the Battle still exist.

In the small town of Waterloo we visited some small but very interesting museums.

I've put another view, showing the steepness of the staircase, in the workshop.

Tech talk

Converted from Raw. Underexposed by 1/3rd stop (speed & aperture are what the camera recorded). Changed to b&w. Applied an Orange filter for some more contrast in the clouds. Then added some more contrast in general.

Edited in MS DIP 2006. Downsized for TL in 3 steps. Added lower border and text.

Hi Frank,

Great B&W photo!!! I really like the POV and contrast here! Indeed a very important historical place! I like how you've captured people walking up the steps, as it gives us a sense of scale! 226 steps, no elevator?? :))

Well done ans TFS

Great b/w indeed, excellent use of nature given conditions for graphics and geometry. I like the use of ppl figures to capture the size of the monument. But letters must go! Great work!

Hi Frank

Very nice minimalistic photo with great B&W tones. Great choise. I like the framing. Excellent work.

Very nicely captured, Frank. I like the heavy clouds which give a very interesting somber mood. Nice capture of the monument in silhouette and the people are important here to give a sense of scale. Excellent b&w with lots of good contrast. Well done!

The people really give a sense of dimension here. Very well composed, a nice balance between the dark and light areas. TFS!

Goeie foto Frank : mooie compositie, lekker "griezelig"
( die leeuw is toch echt dood want na 200 jaar moet die een honger hebben ! )
én de juiste keuze gemaakt om het in B/W te posten >: -)

Impressive B&W shot! Great mood, excellent POV and composition. I specially like the people included, they give a feeling of size.
Well done!

I have heard of the Battle of Waterloo. And the phrase, "Wellington met his waterloo at Waterloo."
Stark image here Frank. The people are well placed - did you wait for them to be at that part of the climb to take the photo? And I like the colour of the sky. Well done my friend,
Janice

Great comp. The people give a real nice scale.

one of the best images I ever saw of this historic place, love the comp, you get a dood sense of height and proportion, thanx, M, (*_*)

Hey Frank,

Nice and interesting shot with very little destractions. Perhaps you could have cloned out the threes on the left to put more emphasis on the triangular shape.

TFS,
Pedro

Hi Frank,

Nicely captured and well done on the comp.
Not an easy capture, good for a silhoutte.
If camera was mounted on tripod, Bkt 3, in Cs you can do the HDR thing.
